I have never made a corset, but I have watched a lot of videos of people who sew corsets often and one of the tricks they use is they have a ready-made strip of grommets that they can sew into the mock-up and then remove and save for the next mockup. Then they can test the fit without doing all of that work just for a mock-up. If you fall in love with corsetry and see more in your future, this might be worth doing.
@feed8647Ай бұрын
I usually use a zipper in the back, it´s much faster than to lace up the mock ups every time. If you have no experience making corsets I highly reccomend making one mock up with grommets though so you can see how the fabric behaves when you lace it up. Placing them wrong can lead to unwanted warping and fit issues!

Sorry in advance for the long comment. I’ve made a lot of formal wear, even though I don’t have a lot of excuses to wear it, and I would like to pass on some things I’ve learned over the years. One option for the corset is cotton bobbinette. It’s what I use for all of my corselettes since it’s very comfortable and, especially with a waist stay, surprising strong. It can definitely be difficult to find, though, nor can it support as much waist reduction as coutil. Another suggestion is to use large seam allowances for a corset (I always trace out the pattern and then just roughly cut them out, then thread trace). Then after I make a mockup, I use the fabric pieces as my pattern. Especially as I’m not symmetrical (who is lol) I then don’t have to add the changes back to a paper pattern. Not sure if you’re planning on using synthetic whalebone for the final, but as someone who’s used both I’d recommend spiral steel. It’s way more bendy and I think it’s more comfortable! Finally! There are a lot of ways to attach the corset/ corselette. If it doesn’t follow the neckline I bind the top and then hand stitch it in. If it does match the outer dress neckline I stitch it right sides together and flip, then prick stitch around the top to keep it where I want it. I also usually use hook and eyes instead of grommets as it’s less bulk, and I’ll offset it from the zipper of the outer dress so it’s less obvious from the outside. I make the corset close entirely. I’d mentioned the “Bridal Couture” book on a previous video of yours, as while I’ve never made a wedding dress I’ve used that book extensively to learn how to make formal wear. I need someone to hold my hand, otherwise I get overwhelmed. I admire your ability to dive in, I’m a list-maker who takes forever to start anything! Can’t wait to keep seeing your progress, your design looks amazing ❤
@fromcarlybАй бұрын
You have no idea how helpful this is!!!!!! Thank you so much for taking the time to share your insights with me. I've been wondering about the difference between synthetic whalebone & spiral steel...& I'll go with the spiral steel after your comment I think!! Thank you so much for your comment!!!

I came to the comments to see if someone else had mentioned that bodies are rarely symmetrical! I made a gown a few years ago with a fitted bodice and found out that the right side of my back is a full centimeter wider than the left! I would ask a friend to help you take in the bodice while wearing it instead of using the dress form and mirroring the adjustments if possible 😊

A gore or a godet adds volume, gusset adds ease. Godets generally attach on two sides and are triangular (hence the widening at the bottom of a skirt or corset). A gore is more trapezoid and can be used to construct the entire piece (for instance your corset is made up of gores). A Gusset tends to be squarish and usually attaches on all sides... like the crotch of pants or in the under arm.

When sewing boning in (directly or in channels), swap the orientation of the bone each seam to counteract the 'curling' in effect. I think its a common problem because boning is stored as a roll, so it gets used to curling in one direction!

A corselette inside the bodice of the dress helps to form the dress. Don't forget about structure for the overall dress. The bodice holds up the skirt layers. I highly recommend looking at how cosplayers construct their ballgowns and bodices. I found their techniques the most helpful when I made my first strapless dress. Love the videos! Keep them coming! If you look at page 7 or 8 of that corset making book you mentioned, there should be a diagram labeled ‘Corset Map” the corset in this diagram has a “Modesty Panel” sewn in so that your skin doesn’t show through the lacing. I’m not a sewist yet so maybe I’m wrong but I have seen this in other corseted dresses. The panels that I’ve seen were made of the same outside material as the rest if the corset. I hope this helps. Congrats on the wedding btw.

Modesty Panels are really helpful, but I would advice to wear at least one layer of clothing under your actual dress and/or corset, even if it´s just a simple shift. First you have layer of protection from dirt and sweat and secondly it provides a bit of cushion against any metal parts. When corsets where standard part of a woman´s wardrobe thex where never worn without, and they knew what they where doing ^^
@caitlinmchugh839Ай бұрын
The “tulle” used in corsets is often actual a mesh specifically for corsets. It’s stiffer and not stretchy. I have seen people use non-stretchy tulle, and they use a few layers alternating the grain for each layer

Hi! First of all, congratulations! I'm so excited to see the progress on your dress. It's impossible not to be excited for your dress because you are so thrilled to be making it! I just wanted to pop in here and offer maybe a little bit of advice. I've been making corsets for a couple of years and consider myself to still be very much a beginner. But from my understanding for corsets to be comfortable they shouldn't tighten around your ribs, because this will end up hurting when you wear them for longer. This is probably what's happening in your altered version, since you talk about spillage over the top. I fit mine in a way that I still have enough room in the bust area to be able to wedge my hand in there. This way my lungs can still comfortable expand while, you know, breathing :P. I also think your thought process at the end was the right direction. If you are not trying to drastically change the shape of your body to reach a certain silhouette, a corset's main function is to hold up your dress and to distribute the weight of the entire dress to the whole corset instead of just on your waist. It's there to make the wearing of a big dress more comfortable. Also, please try on your final version for longer periods of time, because pressure points often don't make themselves known until they are pressed upon for a long time. It would be such a shame if you ended up being uncomfortable on your wedding day! (I think I saw some other people also mention them, but Morgan Donner, Bernadette Banner, Abby Cox and Nicole Rudolph all have great videos on corsets and fitting them if you want to watch some great ones.)
@DarlingAdventurerАй бұрын
I don't normally comment on videos, but I happen to know a bit about corsetry. I think you need a bit more room in the bust to prevent the spillage, like you said at the end. Regarding the "provocativeness" you can always make the bodice of the dress higher than the corset inside. Looks beautiful though! Also, loved hearing you sing a My Fair Lady song! 😁 I love that show
@fromcarlybАй бұрын
AH so helpful!! I actually did this exact modification in the toiles in the next upcoming video & it did help so much!!! Also I kept thinking the corset had to match exactly with the neckline of the bodice of the dress... so this is so good to know!!!!! Thank you!!!!!

@katerrinah5442Ай бұрын
My best advice with fitting corsets is to add lacing and boning every single time you want to do a fitting because there's no way to know for sure how it fits otherwise! To make things easier you can duct tape the boning to the insider of the corset and you can make up a lacing strip to be reused so you don't have to do all the eyelets every time! The sew on boning from spotlight is ok, but isn't the strongest. I use a combination of spiral steel and flat steel so in my mockups I will use the jumbo zip ties from bunnings - they're absoletuely huge and affordable. Theyre also easier to work with than the flat and spiral steel. I will sew in the steel for the final mockup but when I'm making a ton of initial mock ups duct tape and jumbo zip ties save time! You're doing a great job for a beginner, the shape you got was really nice! It's overwhelming to start but I'm sure you will get a lovely finished garmet!

thank you soooooo much for this!!! i'm gonna go to bunnings now then! sounds like a great plan. hopefully we get to the finished product!!!! hahah!!

Perhapse, someone can correct me if im wrong. I believe that to avoid spillage, allowance must be given back to the bust. Even the most modeslty cinched corsets will redistribute flesh from the waist upwards and downwards, making the bust actually somewhat larger than it was before lacing up. If the bust doesn't accommodate the shifting flesh, it typically finds its way out near the armpits and the back.

I guess what I'm saying is a mesh corselet isn't REALLY a corset. It's more like an attached bra, but a coutil corset is a body altering bit of engineering

This is so exciting!! Corsets can be tricky but once you nail that fit, it’s amazing! You’re doing brilliantly. I’d use the corset as a base and then drape the bodice over it. you are doing amazing!! a note for your musings at 8:26; something sturdy like a cotton twill is good for corsets that will stand alone & are designed to be worn over and over and over, supporting both the body and the outergarments. Something like a tulle corset within a dress is helpful to give it structure but is not as durable longterm; this is usually fine because most fancy corset-dresses will not be worn super long/hard, the way that an all-purpose everday corset would be. tl;dr it is mostly about the durability :) happy sewing!

Bernadette Banner's most recent video (Using 18th Century Corsetry to Drape a Flowy Gown...) has a bit at the very start where she mentions how 50s couture uses bobbinet to create a lightweight but structured inner layer by cutting pieces alternate directions on the fabric grain.

Hi Carly. I’ve made a couple of red thread reproduction corsets and here are my tips. I’d try sizing down that pattern. Unless you plan to close it in the back and not lace it then go with the original pattern as is. Coitel is great because it’s thin but it’s expensive and it’s a pain to hand sew on as it’s tightly woven. I think I got mine off amazon. Zip ties make the best bones for a corset. Happy sewing!

You may already know this, but how you tie/lace the corset will dramatically change how it fits/sits on your body, you will probably want the pull lines to be at your waist so that it evenly pulls everything together. You probably also want to add back in some fabric at the top, so that when you tie the corset onto yourself there wont be as much "spillage"

Keep going, and remember that everyone is here for you. May I suggest you go to a couple of bridal shops with all your questions and look at how the dresses are constructed as well as trying on something that is similar and see and feel how it fits. Some of the fit issues might be because it's a mid-bust corset pattern (if I heard correctly)! So it's intended to sit more at the fullest point of your bust, not at at the overbust. This is a more historical undergarment style, but could be tricky to get to work as a basis for your whole bodice - especially if you want more coverage. You may need to try merge your pattern with an overbust pattern so you can get some good contouring and coverage in the chest zone. Loving the process and the whole journey!

i'm loving this series!! i like seeing ur thought process and how u deal with the uncertainty/decision making that goes into a huge project like this. i've seen similar videos from other creators who seem to have a fully formed concept right out the gate, so it's really refreshing to see u try things and how u problem solve this stuff. i'm a VERY amateur sewist so i'm in absolute awe of everything u make :) can't wait to see what u do next!

I love how it's coming together! I'm a similar body type, and the flattening/spillage challenge up top happens to me too. I'm wondering what it would look like if the corset structure ended below the bust? That way the top was more flattering and felt more comfortable.

Mariah Pattie has a video in which she sewed like breast pillow things to help with the lift and fit of some of her corsets (apparently, this was common practice back in the day, too)

I know _so_ little about sewing, and even less about corsets, but I wonder if adding cups to your corset would help fix your fit issues re: spillage/squish-age? Obviously that changes the design though, so I don't know how feasible it is- but I'm confident you'll figure it out and it will all turn out phenomenally! And congrats on the new ironing board!

I'm catching up and in the first video when you said you wanted to use second hand fabric I was like "THE SEWING LAIR!" (where I volunteer) but in this video you said you went to the Nest and I was like EXCELLENT CHOICE!! Although if you came into the Lair when I was on I would have rabbited on for ages about your dress with you and what fabrics are what and etc. We try and identify the fabric contents on the tags too, just so you have an idea of how to care for the fabric (and don't melt it with a too hot iron!)

Someone may have told you already, but Bernadette Banner has just released a video making a structural corset out of cotton bobbinet and draping and sewing a dress over it on a dress form! It’s like she knew you needed to see (a version of) the process!!

Idk the right way but I would do as you said: start with the final corset pattern but add extra (kinda how u add extra for the garment in comparison to the lining) and I also think the spillage might be actually a result of the reduction you did on the top so maybe it’s not that much about adding height as it is about adding a little bit of width back? Can u test it by making a couple cuts in the seams while it’s on you and maybe ducktaping the proper width together? Or maybe you should do a tryout from the og pattern fully as wel to compare the fit between two and see how spillage is doing over there?
@divinenonbinaryАй бұрын
Also I know that for the gap on the back you can add a piece of fabric like the one you see in jackets with a zipper. Idk the term for it but it basically goes under the lace and overlaps with the second part. I do think maybe your gap is a bit too big though so in case you would need to let it a bit looser then it will get even bigger and harder to bridge
@divinenonbinaryАй бұрын
But also if you don’t want to be flattened you can always do that fit where it’s not boned on the chest? So it like ends just right under your chest so you do that more fitted and the corset just goes kind of a bit upwards towards the back or smn like that
@divinenonbinaryАй бұрын
And as it relates to the corset turning sideways/spiraling : fabrics often dried in a weird direction because after weaving warp and weft are not handled at all 90 degrees so let’s say if the end of the roll is uneven and to roll it onto a bobin they’re pulling on it equally it can create a situation where the grain is deformed. I really recommend steaming/shrinking/pre washing your natural fabrics especially for such precise patterns like this!

Sorry to comment again, but when you lace your corset, the temptation is to tighten in the middle. That's going to squeeze you up and down. Make sure you're laced parallel, and it should hold and support but not squish things. The breasts will naturally lift, because you're pushing them against the body. However! You need to lace towards the middle - this will help prevent (if youre a busty lady it will not be a complete fix). You lace top and bottom, tightening as you go towards the middle. You do this by creating a "bunny ear" lacing pattern - hard to explain but you can look it up easily. You essentially make a loop that is tied at the bottom, and you have two bunny ears in the middle. You might have done it already, but I'm watching on mobile so it's hard to tell! You may want to look at making stays rather than a corset, which laces in the front, although it's not the look you're going for. One more thing - you can mold the boning! With heat and something curved under the bust, like a pressing ham, you can shape the plastic to conform around the breasts rather than being a plank. That also helps with ghe boobage :)
