The explanation of shapes was so helpful!!!! I am new and self-taught to sewing so folks like you who go through the process and talk about the in-between parts are a godsend. I would love to start making my own clothes, but I’m quite not quite there yet, so I have been altering things that I own. For a first project I took in a pair of jeans 4 inches and did some messy darts, but it works. I have cropped and hemmed some things. Most recently, by hand, I took in a black velvet floor length dress for a friend‘s wedding that had a very strict dress code so it was my only appropriate outfit (which I also found at a thrift store for $1!) I did it in my hotel room the morning of the wedding because I didn’t have enough time to figure out how to use the walking foot on my sewing machine before I left and was too afraid of mechanically mangling it.

You HAVE to watch Mrs Harris goes to Paris!! It's a bit cringe, but the dresses are amazing and they are vintage contour. I'm not getting married but I once saw a grey wedding dress with raggedy fabric roses in. I would have had the roses trailing down the back of the dress like a trail of breadcrumbs.😂

Bernadette banner just released a video where she made a corset from some kind of tulle or mesh (her harvest moon dress)!! She is a super experienced corset maker and normally uses more cottony materials, but she was doing a pattern based on i believe 50s corselettes or something of that sort?? Might be worth checking out if you want to see a mesh corset in the flesh and get some insights from an expert :)

Just weighing in on the veil discussion: you said in the last video that the feeling of having the veil in your hair and over your shoulders was delightful and you’d miss out on that with the cape/clip situation. It would also leave your shoulders super open. I thought I didn’t want a veil but then I tried a super super light fingertip length and it was lovely, and didn’t take away from my beautiful lacy dress

I'm loving this journey so much so far! I would also love to sew my own wedding dress but am not feeling competent enough to do it. I find so much value in you expressing your uncertainty in your ability to execute your dream dress, contrasted against not letting that uncertainty stunt your big dress dreams, being so excited, and believing in yourself to do it and learn along the way. I'm so, so excited to see how it all turns out, but mostly to find out how your dress makes you feel at the end of the day, even if it isn't technically perfect. I have no doubt that putting so much love, thought and energy into creating your dress will manifest amazing feelings when wearing it. Edit: p.s I think doing a bodice veil would be amazing if you're wanting to wear a necklace/earrings (so the drama of a hair veil doesn't take away from the jewellery), or a hair veil if not!!

Made my first wrap dress for myself in 1964. You will find that knowing how to sew makes you think differently about everything you see. You will see everything as a series of steps, rather than just seeing the finished object. The skill also extends to woodworking and other crafting. I am glad that sewing is coming back into fashion.

Hi Carly! I'm also in the process of making my wedding dress and have been binging on KZbin sewers making theirs for like half a year now 😄 Maybe I would add @AdventuresofSarahandEm to your list, the corset she makes for her wedding dress seems similar to your ideas - and she has many gown videos as well. I wish you great luck and happyness for this project!😊

you are doing amazing!! a note for your musings at 8:26; something sturdy like a cotton twill is good for corsets that will stand alone & are designed to be worn over and over and over, supporting both the body and the outergarments. Something like a tulle corset within a dress is helpful to give it structure but is not as durable longterm; this is usually fine because most fancy corset-dresses will not be worn super long/hard, the way that an all-purpose everday corset would be. tl;dr it is mostly about the durability :) happy sewing!

I am sooo excited to see your design come to life!! I definitely recommend steel boning for a corset. You need sharp cutters to trim them to the right size, and then caps on either end but one you use it you’ll never want to use plastic boning again! 💚✨

I'm catching up and in the first video when you said you wanted to use second hand fabric I was like "THE SEWING LAIR!" (where I volunteer) but in this video you said you went to the Nest and I was like EXCELLENT CHOICE!! Although if you came into the Lair when I was on I would have rabbited on for ages about your dress with you and what fabrics are what and etc. We try and identify the fabric contents on the tags too, just so you have an idea of how to care for the fabric (and don't melt it with a too hot iron!)

Bernadette Banner's most recent video (Using 18th Century Corsetry to Drape a Flowy Gown...) has a bit at the very start where she mentions how 50s couture uses bobbinet to create a lightweight but structured inner layer by cutting pieces alternate directions on the fabric grain.

So beautiful!!! I'm making a corset for my sister and this gave me some new good ideas to try out. I love hearing you work through some of the stuff that holds me up sometimes - like these fabrics don't match or I'm not 100% certain what I want - just not to worry about that for now! Excited to see what you create :)
