Step by step video on making a wooden box for a pen that I turned for my wife's grandfather for Christmas. Made from a block of cherry wood.

I know this is an old video, and maybe you've figured this out already, but you had your fence set up on the wrong side of the router bit. The slots in the table top are for the fence that probably originally came with that table. The way you had it set up, it was pushing your workpiece away from the fence. If your fence was set up on the other side of the bit it would pull with piece toward the fence and give you a more stable cut.

A good lesson in letting the bandsaw blade do the work: if you push too hard, you can displace the blade and move your line of cut. This may not look significant at the start of the cut, but by the end it can be an annoying deflection. great video though.

You should have use a plunge cut to make the grove so it wouldn't go all the way to the ends. You should have taken much smaller cuts with the router and maybe put a 60° cut on you fence. Great looking box couple of tweaks and that could be super sweet

Your lucky you kept your fingers on that router table , rout the grooves before you cut the angle that way the fence can support the bit of wood safely, I'm only saying as i would like you yo stay safe

Alan Prince thanks for the concern. Next time I'll run some tests before filming, but that's part of the fun. Getting real life experience on film. Thanks again

Going from left to right on the router is called a Kline cut and it’s very dangerous. You’re lucky your router didn’t rip it out of your hands and fling it across your shop.

*as he starts to route the groove* Me: he's pushing that in the wrong way. My mom: why? *router pushes piece away from fence.* *Twice*. Me: gives my mom a look. My mom: oh. Lol cool design though man even several years later. Everyone starts has a first time using a tool.

Seriously lucky to have made it out free of injury on both the router table and the table saw. I've been badly injured in the past on both, by using them the way you did in this video. And on a side note, what was the purpose of using wood glue on brass rods? It doesn't help them stick in the holes, so I was just curious

Good Work, I see you are using some of the same tools I do, the Skil saw and the crafsman router. I fabricated a zero clearance blade shield for the saw, but it only works on the 7 1/2 inch blades, not enough meat to fit the ten inch. I used stumpy nubs pattern for a router "box" and used a French cleat hanger for it to hang on the side of the workbench ala Jay Bates, off his router mounting plan. If you find an idea for making a zero throat clearance for a 10 inch blade, let me know.

Since I read *TopFineWoodworking. Com* , I think nothing will ever surpass it as an outstanding woodworking book. The book consists of attractive images as well as drawings and also reader-friendly text. I consider this book a "must have" since it supplies a broad range of information on just about everything working with woodworking and does it quite well.?

Why didn't you use a table saw to make the pen recess if you weren't going to drop in .5-1" from the edge of the piece in order to save the edges' solid profile?

The reason the angle cut came out that way was because u didn't have the top support arm down closer to the cut and the blade flexed. When u use the band saw ALWAYS have the top support arm close to the cut.

*TopFineWoodworking. Com* is an amazing book about woodworking. I`m a graduate of a one-year carpentry course from a local tech college. Of all books I`ve read during my study about carpentry, I think this is the finest book I`ve read so far. It explains everything regarding woodworking as well as complements it with helpful photos.?

Patch Ster Thanks for the comments! You're right on all accounts and I hope I'm always receptive to constructive criticism and guidance. I did cut the piece extra long for that excess slop to trim off later in the process for just that reason, but you're right about scrap wood to test on. Thanks again.

I noticed the dull table saw blade as well. Cheap upgrade that will make life much easier. Changed mine recently, had no idea how bad it was until I made my first cut with the new blade.

aside from needs related to safety, which has no price, I truly appreciate the fact you make great videos, and quality projects using CRAFTSMANSHIP rather than money. I have some expensive tools and don't get nearly the results you do with passion, practice and sometimes a little patience. I will always be watching and learning from every one of your projects so thank you thank you thank you and please keep up the great work.
