For another band speedrun, here's something many people wouldn't expect: *Budgie.* For those not aware of them, they're a highly-underappreciated band from Wales that influenced many of metal's heavy-hitters, such as Metallica and Soundgarden (who could _also_ make for a good speedrun).

I have always appreciated how their simplicity complicates their live performances. Look, if Petrucci misses a note, 90% of the audience doesn't catch it, if Angus fucks up anything in any song, the fourteen year old girl there with her dad goes, "that didn't sound right...". It's a lot of pressure...

You've obviously never seen them live. It's basically Angus just wanking over the pentatonic for 2 hours. Every song has extended improvised guitar solos, with more guitar solos in between songs.

You could attempt to go for Amon Amarth. Their style is very defined and imho pretty easy to emulate. Which probably is the reason that there is no other band even sounding close to them - they would be instantly called out as a rip-off.

@@BigMuff75I was listening to Be'lakor's "Of Breath and Bone" a few days ago and thought to myself the album sounded a lot like Amon Amarth. I immediately remembered that after reading your comment. Another similar band I can name is Havamal, which is probably an even closer match.

@@BigMuff75I also remembered Varang Nord and Skalmold. These bands may be less similar sound-wise, but their songs are the kind that can pump you up, so to say (very high energy). I've seen Varang Nord live about five times, they always manage to hype up the audience. One of the times I saw them was in a festival and their mosh pit was comparable to headlining bands, despite them being fairly little known. Skalmold I also saw, when they were touring with Alestorm and they put up an incredible show too. They were supposed to warm Alestorm up, but by the time they finished their set, I was not only warmed up, but needed a break, because I was too tired from moshing.
