Great diy. A suggestion : Plastic weld a plastic jar top with screw lid on the top tray. Cut that lid and add the screen to it. That way the activate charcoal can be change easily.

instead of straight through, wouldnt it be better to have a central inlet and radial outlet to evenly distribute airflow through the filter material?
@edwardjackson97914 ай бұрын
You may have missed it but there is a baffle (white plastic) that sits between the inlet and outlet. So air flows in and has to make a turn to get around the baffle. This gives the air flow more contact time with the activated charcoal. It should be in contact with the activated charcoal for at least 0.25 seconds to allow for adsorption to occur. You also want to keep the air flow as low as possible but still provide about a 0.25 inch of water over press in your shelter. Thanks for the comment.

Just get old spent ones, drill out the three rivets holding the end cap and refill them then use zip ties in place of the rivets when closing it back up. You can buy "refillable" ones buts a gimmick only difference between them and a normal one is a different plastic end cap and they are double the price.

Just wondering if you could just use hot glue or silicon instead of welding? How do you determine if you have enough charcoal? For instance, two people for a week? I like this design.
@edwardjackson97912 жыл бұрын
You don’t need to plastic weld just make sure the outside surface is smooth so you get a good seal in the bucket. You can also glue it in the bucket if you don’t plan to replace it. This should be fine for two people. The HEPA filter will be doing most of the filtering. Particularly in the event of a nuclear attack. After 48 hours the radiation will have decayed off to a level that is about 99% . So even the fallout radiation will be very low.
@mistermaster4495 Жыл бұрын
@@edwardjackson9791 Yes, 48 hours...but many USA and Russia nuclear bombs are enriched with Cesium which has HalfTime of decay of 35 years.... Sure, you will not get radiation poisoning for 48 hours, but when you get out, you will get radiation for 35 years unless you dig out 0,5 Meter of earth and get rid of it.

Maybe a bead of silicon around the outside and then quickly put a strip of duct tape over the top (while the silicon is wet) to ensure it holds together and also gives you an even surface?

QUESTION: Hepa filter to catch larger particles. Then activated charcoal filter to catch tiny radioactive particles. Then another Hepa filter?? Finally the air blower pulling the air through the piping, filters, and into the bunker for a Pressure Positive environment? I’ve read the bunker doesn’t need to be air tight as long as it’s pressure positive. That way air is constantly pushing out and nothing can float in. QUESTION: Also to note the charcoal filter mechanism needs to be in the bunker otherwise it will get continually irradiated by fallout??
@edwardjackson97919 ай бұрын
You can use HEPA on both sides of the activated charcoal but the inlet can just be regular HVAC type filter to catch the big particles before entering the activated charcoal bed so it won’t plug. The charcoal does some mechanical filtering but its primary purpose is the trap and hold up the radioactive gases that can’t be filtered. This is called adsorption. The radioactive gas can then decay to radioactive particles which can then be filtered out by the exhaust HEPA Filter. Yes a positive pressure is best about 0.25 inches of water pressure is enough. The filter would best be outside the bunker but somewhat protected(i.e. in a garage as long as it it not close to your shelter). The filter will become more and more contaminated but this type filter would probably last at least a month and by then it would likely be safe to exit the shelter. And during that time the filter would also be decaying as time goes by.

Thank you for your kindness💝🤗 Could you tell me what this filter was used for? It helpful to see things in action. Did you ever put in the HEPA filter and if so where can I ask where you got it?
@edwardjackson979111 ай бұрын
The design is for an NBC filter for filtering during emergencies but can be used for clearing odors from air. I ordered the HEPA filter for a vacuum cleaner (craftsman shop vac) from Amazon. About $30. I have another video on the complete build and others for the use on my channel if you would like to see more about it. Thanks for your comment and sorry it took so long to respond.

I noticed on this design you didn’t put the holes all the way around the bottom and pack with the fabric . Any reason why? You could sell these. If you do let us know
@edwardjackson97919 ай бұрын
Yes this is just the charcoal filter part. It would fit inside the outer bucket that has holes, HEPA Filter, fan, and roughing filter material. So if you look at the video I did before this is just the charcoal filter part. I was still trying different designs to make it easier. I am not really interested in selling any I just want to share the ideas based on what I’ve learned. I’m sure there are many ways to skin this cat. Thanks for the comment.

Serious questions here.: How do you know the FAN is actualy intaking air throu the charcoal by filtrating it and not from some holes around that charcoal? How BIG must be the charcoal granules itself? Are bigger granules of charcoal more risky of letting radioactive material flowing in? Are charcoal pellets better then granules?
@edwardjackson9791 Жыл бұрын
It has to be activated charcoal first, not just charcoal. The activated charcoal is produced in and oxygen rich environment and has many tiny pours that trap the gases and allow them to decay to particulates that can then be filtered but the HEPA filter. Activated charcoal that you want to use is like very coarse sand and the sellers typically show the particles in some picture form. You have to secure all holes or passages around the filter and charcoal. That is best done by locating the fan as close the the filter as possible so you don’t have a chance of a suction hose failure that would bypass the filter. That is why I put the fan on top of the filter bucket and sealed all the penetrations I could find. The key is having the air flow in contact with the activated charcoal for about .25 seconds. So, the beds we typically use at nuclear plants are about 2 min deep but more would be better unless you have a way to measure the flow.

eBay generally has a wide selection and various sizes. I would say one that is for air filtration would be best.
