A well-sharpened cabinet scraper is a joy to use. Grain direction doesn't matter; so even highly-figured wood can be scraped from any direction. I have a large icing spatula that I picked up in a thrift store (charity shop). Being second-hand, I got a great big one for under 2 dollars (1.64 quid). And there's the safety issue -- if I knock a spatula off the workbench, there's little danger. Thanks for the video!

I got to find time to have a go at a stringed instrument, it looks a neat challenge. Thanks for sharing Michael.

I will be doing some videos next year on making a bowed psaltery, an easy to make Appalachian dulcimer and a bowed lyre, all very doable first instruments to make and play even if you are nor already a player of anything

I'll be watching out for them.

You can take it down just under 2mm at the edge at the extreme on this instrument as long as you keep the central area thick enough, Its just that its better to leave that final thicknessing for the final sanding after gluing

The Lyre kit has been routed with a CNC controlled pin router, (high tech!! ) On my Lyre Making Cd rom I show how to do it with a bench drill and forstner bit

That sound when the cutting edge of the plane blade is scraped on the table made me shiver to my core. Those planes should be placed on their side and never blade down, they take too damn long to sharpen properly.

about 75-mm long 209mm wide, 24mm thick, *it tapers to 18mm at the end in this example)

You need a bench hook to keep your board from jumping around.

Absolutely, This was a quick demo, I think time was running against me that Christmas, the light was so poor in my workshop too I filmed this in the garden on my potting bench. freezing cold and snowing

what do you use to route out the body of the Lyre?
@michaeljking15 жыл бұрын
I was working quickly in the video as it was just below freezing and snowing, I condensed the video down from 30 minutes to 10 minutes for youtube, The main thing is to take it real slow!!

Hi there. :) what method did you use to cut the middle of the wood out? I was thinking a drill, but It's been taking a while. 😊 Thank you

+BlueRoseArt On My Lyre Making CD I demonstrate a simple method with Forstner bit an a pillar/Bench drill. A router and template helps to clean things up but it can be done by hand tools

I have made a lyre. will it sound higer/better soun if i make a hole in the center front ?
@LiamDavey959 жыл бұрын
+Jens Bonde if it didn't take you long and you enjoyed it, make another and see. I plan on making 3+ during the course of my guitar making degree, each slightly different (one even with a piezo pickup)

+Jens Bonde These lyres have very shallow soundboxes and thin tops and don't need soundholes if done well, that said the Trossingen Lyre from Germany does have a series of small holes in the centre and on each arm and it does help the sound on a very thick soundboard, see my trossingen lyre video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i2m6nqqMhspmjpY
