Making An Epic Beaded Necklace // Goth Queen Collar

You asked for it, so I simply had to learn how to make one! This epic beaded necklace was all the rage in 1998 I expect, and I have had my original one for nearly that long. I found it forgotten in an old little box, was excited to wear it, and now I have another one that's brand new and slightly more green!

Wonderful necklace! In Russia we call it "Mylene Farmer necklace", because it became popular after her concert, but Mylene isn't the first lady to wear it. This necklace was inspired with Art Nouveau, using motifs imitating spiders' bodies. And a spider symbolizes depression.

I love the necklace! When I do projects like this, I like to lay out the beads I need in the order I need them, one section at a time. That way, I don't have to keep track of what comes next once I start beading.

I was a highschool Spanish and mathematics teacher in a private school for over 20 years. My only contact with goth was the high school students. My impressions of goth were not good. I am so glad that the American retailer agreed that August is the prep month for the fall prep of September. I was on a bee-line for some goods, and I encountered a stray porcelain pumpkin, which promptly came home with me. I've had enough summer for one year, Also, I make a lot of very long chains, and I dread doing them on string. Having to knot them every couple of beads so that the necklace doesn't stretch under it's own weight is a pain. Normally, I work by making beaded chains, but there are a few projects that are going to need to be strung, and I live in fear of string breaks. I bought some fire-line, and the special clips for it, but I still have not worked up the courage ( nor the spoons) to begin that task. Beautiful necklace. I can see how you'd get confused -- WOW

I ALWAYS weave ends in bead woven projects. It would make me paranoid cutting close to the knot too. Nymo is nice to work with. Better than fireline imo, especially for jewellery, because it’s more flexible and drapey. Your necklace is really pretty Bianca, and SO much work!!! Worth it tho, cos she’s a stunner

Try Native American owned beading supply stores. They carry a lot of sizes, especially Czech beads as those are the ones most tribes use. *we also buy by the pound for our projects.

Love the necklace your wearing, I thought like many you had made it😹😹, good for you on taking the plunge into beading it can be so much fun, I do manly seed bead designs with focal points. For a very long time. I have beads in my stash that are over 40 years old🙀, I think it’s time I revisited my stash which has grown over the years.😹😹 A trick to help with complex designs is to not lay out your beads in piles but to layout them out in set groups before you stitch them in to the order that you want them. Over time your mind will develop muscle memory of your design regardless of what is used and you can switch back to the set piles. Size 5 is not a common size, I don’t think I have any 5mm in that shaped bead in my very extensive collection of beads. 11/0 2mm 3mm 4mm 6mm 8mm 10mm 12mm and so on are the most common which goes up by 2mm and not 1mm. Try Potomac Beads as they deal with the factories with their own designed beads. I use to buy from them all the time, but they don’t ship to Australia anymore 😼😼 I don’t knot my threads but rather I weave back through at least 3-4 times around the whole piece to ensure they are locked in. The fishing line that I have been using for the past 8 years has not had this issue at all. It’s Berkeley Fireline which comes in many thread weights. As I use 15/0’s and smaller so I use a size 13 needle. The biggest problem I have found is that you do need more than one supplier of beads if you are chasing a set colour groups as well as shapes. Because of this I deal with 2 companies in the US it use to be 3 but as I said Potomac Beads has dropped shipping to Australia now, and I have 3 companies in Australia, 2 in the UK and one in Yugoslavia. The uranium beads are safe😹😹😹 they are so low it’s like walking out in the sunshine must admit they doo look nice glowing under UV lights 😹😹 For many of my beading projects that I have designed, I have been collecting the right beads slowly as they pop up on the market. I think it was great that you dived in and showed as you learned, this is a great way to encourage those who are sitting on the fence that it’s not that hard once you jump in.❤️❤️❤️❤️

It's really hard to find one source for all the colors/sizes of any kind of beads. I'm an avid beadweaving student of eight years and I've never found that one magical bead source. I've found specific color beads from the same source but at a later time. But that's what you sign up for when you use Czech beads; most of the makers are small shops and produce small batches of one color of different shapes with one batch of glass until they run through it and then clean out the kiln and mix other colors. Most don't seem to have more than one kiln. One really good source of Czech beads is Kraftika. They are in the Czech Republic, but the website is great and the shipping is very fast, reliable, and reasonably priced. I've ordered from them many times with no problems. I can't imagine making that whole necklace with two needles. I figured out a few years ago that almost any two needle design can be done with one needle. That was the best day of my beading life! But I wholeheartedly endorse your preference of weaving your ends rather than cutting near a knot!

So... now you'll be needing to make a display for that incredible piece. Or the "set" of colours. I made a display case for a number of pairs of earrings, after buying some hand beaded "red dress" earrings created by an Indigenous craftsperson (through MCC Ontario). They're too lovely to hide. So I added hooks to a hinged display box with a clear lid (apparently it was a chocolates box), I thrifted. It's hung on the wall like a cabinet, and now I can enjoy beautiful dangly earrings even when I'm not wearing them - because they're not very well suited to my daily life.

In terms of "getting lost" with the pattern... my brain would be helped by colouring the pattern, (like we're seeing in the inserted pattern images) and taping labels beside the bead piles the same colour, with the size written as well, at least for a 1 or 2 colour project. Colours "mean" something to my brain, while numbers are kind of nebulous to my memory. I might group bead types by colour family. Warm colours are all round, blue are square, green is long... whatever feels vaguely intuitive.

I've been working on a beading project that I at least in part blame you for. I'm making a sheer haori (Japanese coat) with a beaded spiderweb over one shoulder. I've been (not) working on it for a few months, and only starting really picking up steam after getting a better frame to stretch my fabric in. It's finally starting to look cool, but the number of times I've had to re-do a strand because I tacked it to the fabric wrong and accidentally cut the main thread instead of the tacking thread...Oh how I dread the sound of falling beads now.

😅 I've heard the sound of falling beads. I was completing a five strand necklace a lady wanted done all in seed beads. As I was finishing off the threads my hand slipped and I literally cut through the end of all 5 strands. It sounded like rain. 😅 The shreaking could be heard in town. That was an all nighter since I had to redo the entire necklace for delivery the next day. Lesson learned.

I would love to be able to make one of these necklaces for my Daughters wedding in 2025. i think i may have it finished by then if i start today. This is a beautiful piece! It looks to be an excellent addition to the hoard, and something to do while there are no good reasons to leave the house. (The older I get, the fewer reasons qualify as "good".) The folks that don't understand the cost of labor are the ones that complain that they should get a discount. This is a great example of the cost of crafting is the time and patience to do it well.

Good news! Uranium glass is barely above background radiation on average so is good to go in jewellery! There's probably easier sources of uv reactive glass however... I love the necklace and mad props for learning to make it cos youtube comments
