MAKING AN EPIGRAPHIC SQUEEZE OF AN ANCIENT GREEK INSCRIPTION | The Krateros Project

The ancient civilizations of Greece and Rome were prolific epigraphic cultures. They inscribed everything from laws and decrees to hymns and epigrams onto stone surfaces. Many of these inscribed stones survive to this day, and they form an important resource for learning about life in the ancient world.
To enable epigraphers to study large groups of inscriptions all in one place, “squeezes” of the stone surfaces are often produced. Squeezes are paper negatives that preserve Greek and a few Latin inscriptions and occasionally figural decoration. In this video, Charalambos Kritzas, former Director of the Epigraphical Museum in Athens, gives a comprehensive lesson in how to make such an epigraphic squeeze.
The Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, NJ is home to around 30,000 squeezes. The Krateros Project is devoted to digitizing this collection to create an open-access online repository.
