Making an Inline Buzzbait w/ Trailer from Scratch!

We do it all with this one today! We're pouring lead, painting that lead, bending wire, tying a skirt at the vise, and even shooting a SWEET ‪@EpicBaitMolds‬ Freakin Frog trailer to complete this inline buzzbait build!

Put on a decent video and just start bending/cutting... still not as nice/uniform as the machined stuff but they do the trick. Sounds like your buddy needs to settle down!

Just a tip. You can use that wire bender to make your articulating shank. Just make short closed end wire at both ends

A very awesome build. I’m nowhere near your class but I crimp the rivet so it don’t move and you will get more squeak.

Thanks man, you’re too kind! I tried crimping the rivet on a test build and must have had my little boy hands that day… it just wouldn’t lock down. Of course… I was also just using some crappie pliers. May try that again, makes a lot of sense!!

The iron was just an Amazon find… although I didn’t look specifically for one that read F (most or C only if I recall)… and I had to find out that went low enough… it’s crazy some don’t drop below 500 degrees or so! Little toasty for plastisol! Appreciate the support, as always, my friend!

Sooo much can be done with that wire bender. What will be next? Can build spinner bait forms with a twisted line tie? As for the in line buzzbait. I love it. But what would keep it from swimming upside down?

Yes sir, you can definitely do a lot with the former! As for the danger of inverting the bait… YUP!! That’s definitely been on my mind as well. The shape and function of the soft plastic will definitely help, but to ensure it runs “upright” you could, 1). Use an EWG instead and pinch on a split shot or two to the bend of the hook the hook slot is plenty big enough to accommodate), or 2). Swap out the SB hook for a lightweight Swimbait hook to keel the bait. I’d probably drop down to 1/4oz punch shot weight if I went that route. Proofs in the puddin’! I’m looking forward to some open water to see how prevalent that issue may be!

If you stick the hole pin in from the hinge end it works a lot better in my opinion. I pull the Pin out with the mold closed after short time. Then you just pull your lead out of the mold. Easier and faster than pulling it off the pin. Just my opinion.

Hey David, thanks for the question! Yes sir, that is my intention! After I get a chance to field test it and tweak if/as needed, I'll make a batch and get them on the site. The plan is a black, white, and natural/GP type deal, each coming with 6 Freakin Frog trailers. I think that will make a nice combo, but I'm curious to hear your thoughts? You like the combo idea... inline + trailers?

As I was watching I was thinking "please sell a package with trailers!!!". Maybe send 3 frogs of two variations with each wire bait. For example, with white, send 3 silver flake white pearl frogs and 3 two tone black/white with red flake. For example with black, send 3 pure black and 3 black with heavy gold flake. Also dont rig a frog on the wire so that we can choose whether we want more flashy or more subtle trailers from the start. Those are my thoughts. God Bless, David

Can I ask why you had to use a soldering iron to apply the plastic to the spots? Also, another great video... I learn so much from all of your videos!

Hey Mark, great question! The iron keeps the plastic liquified so you can place it and manipulate it. It also allows you to use a small amount of plastic whereas trying to pour a thick drop of liquid juuuuust right may not go well. In short… more control 👍👍. Thanks for the question and comment!

Thanks for the question, I think I follow. You'll always have some space, yeah, but that's a GOOD thing as you'd never want the blade to be hindered by the beads/limited space. The force of the water will push it back against the rivet, but you definitely want some wiggle room to keep it loose and free-spinning. That said, I was a bit conservative and could have reduced the space a bit... but I don't think I would have more than 1/8" or so. Again, I'd rather have a little extra room than run the risk of binding the blade on too tight a wire form! Thanks for the question!

You’d have to get creative on how to rig it, but more sound is always good on a buzz!

I look forward to finding out! The weather is still such that I can't get out to put it through its paces, but I can tell you I've seen some video footage from when it was first released and the bubble trail and noise was pretty awesome then. Between that and the buzz blade, I should be making quite the racket! I think the biggest differences between the AI Atomic Toad and the Epic Freakin Frog are mass and cavity count. The AT looks to be much fatter/taller, the FF has a slimmer profile, and the AT 4 cavity is $200 while the 6 cavity FF is just $30 more for two more baits, pretty sweet. You could get two 3-cavities from AI, but now you're spending $300 to get the same cav count. At the end of the day, its about what you like and what you want to spend! Thanks for the comment CD!
