Oh, it definitely is the deliberate part of showing an ankle that is it. Even now, if you are wearing a skirt, exposing your calves is sexier than wearing a shorter skirt that exposes them passively. It's not that you pull away the skirt to show off your *ankle* that matters, it's that you *pull away the skirt* to show off your ankle.

i always assumed the victorian ankle thing was a modern exaggeration born from how weird victorians could be about legs in general. people learn about how some victorians avoided saying the words legs or trousers, and sometimes covering up table legs, and they start making jokes about repressed victorians and their obsession with a cheeky ankle
@cmm5542
@cmm5542 Жыл бұрын
I think you're probably right. In Agatha Christie's autobiography, she talks about how her Victorian grandmother taught her 'the Queen of Spain has no legs' and to say 'limbs' instead. Even decades later Agatha was a pretty proper person, but she wrote that even as a child she thought the obsession with avoiding legs was nonsensical. One of the few Victorian rules I have yet to find a reasonable explanation for. 🤷‍♀️

I feel the "it's not so much the ankle itself, but the act of exposing the ankle" makes so much sense. I'm Finnish, it's relatively common to go to the sauna with friends and family of all genders, butt-naked, and in this situation not even genitals are Erotic in any way. But someone, say, intentionally dropping a bra strap so that one more centimeter of SHOULDER is bared can still be seductive in another context :D

I'd say you've bullseyed it here. I seem to recall that in pre-Meiji Japan the back of a woman's neck was their 'sexy Victorian ankle', or the thighs - especially the _inner_ thigh (shudder) - in Polynesia, not for any intrinsic quality of the area in question but for the _implication_ of impending sexytimes. I imagine there's an equivalent everywhere, like how America considered the female navel in the 60s the same way it still treats nipples. Like your sauna example, total nudity can be unerotic while just that little bit of extra exposure can be scandalous depending on context.

The thing is though....this is just going to bring in all the weird foot fetish people. You can't show ankles without also showing feet and I'm pretty sure it's all just creepy foot fetish people who subscribe. There are probably thousands of people making money off of feet pics on only fans. I personally am not into feet so I don't know if part of being into the feet include the ankle or not? But frankly men will sexualize any part of the woman's body. Shoulders, knee caps, ears, necks, hair (or lack of hair)etc. So I definitely think a lot of people unironically find ankles sexy.

I was lucky enough to have my great-grandmother as a close part of my life until I was 39 years old. In her later years, one of her favorite pastimes was to browse through old photos. Her favorite was a picture on her wedding day, atop a wagon, headed to her new home with her new husband. EVERY time she held that photo in her gnarled fingers she would say through tears, "Your Grampa never did see my ankles until that day." It WAS a 'thing' to her. It represented her virtue and chastity. They were married in 1911 when she was 18 years old. Whether it was a thing to more urban folks, to her in rural America, it was vitally important and anything else would have been scandalous.

When I did research for my bachelor's thesis in history, I came across an "article" in a local newspaper from 1902 where a particularly charming gentleman made some complaints. His concern was the filthy state of one of the main walking streets, as the women were forced to slightly LIFT THEIR SKIRTS in order to not get horse manure on them, thus showing more ankle than what was deemed appropriate. The very same man also complained about alcohol permits and varieté shows with female performers. Always gave me a good chuckle💃

I thought she had opened a whole market that would become saturated lol. But I understand, it really is too much work and investment. She has the spaces, the shoes, the clothes and the equipment to create great photos. But other people would have to first invest in all those things.

Here's a source. My grandfather (born in the 1800s) told my mother(born in 1928) that he could not understand the way "modern" young women were so ready to expose themselves. He told her that when he was a young man there was nothing as exciting as seeing a well turned ankle when a young woman stepped over a curb!

Bernadette, the lying on the carpet with Lilies was giving strong, Ophelia as painted by John Everett Millais. The oddest Victorian era saucy pics were of women wearing essentially a full-body stocking so that they kind of looked naked but weren't. I read about it in a book, ' French Postcards: An Album of Vintage Erotica' by Martin Stevens.
