The real key to an Opeth song is to have at least 5 different utterly brilliant riffs, worthy of their own song each, within a 5 minute window.

Just cycle through brilliant riffs Chuck Schuldiner style, more or less. Maybe add atonal passages between the riffs for a smoother ride and boom- you've got yourself a banger

@@toprak3479 yea man, Death was also just throwing away riffs left and right. You'd have two or three before the verse even began.

Death - play a bunch of awesome riffs that surprise the listener all the way up to a blistering solo, then boringly repeat everything that came before in the exact same manner. Repeat this formula for 99% of the catalog. Death are in my top 5 favorite bands but I really wish they didn't follow that formula. I usually end up skipping to the next song once the solo's over

It's called "bembe" or something like that iirc. My theory for how it got wrapped up in the band's sound is that Mendez was jamming with it someday and Akerfeldt went "I like that, can you play that for the next 10 years?"

@@toprak3479 Just a double paradiddle with accents in interesting places? Anyways that beat is one of my favourite things from Opeth, just has such a groove to it.
