I can't pick a winner in this fashion contest as both outfits looked absolutely stunning. Also, I'm so glad you continue to advocate for the DIY approach to the goth/punk aesthetic. It really feels disingenuous to see prominent goth KZbinrs blather on about how "you too can look goth if you know how to thrift" while they're pimping out Killstar gear and have hallways and closets lined with hundreds to thousands of dollars' worth of footwear. Well done, ladies!

Beautiful! Both are stunning, but I think you get extra goth points for coffin skirt refab. I love reusing old stuff. It is far cheaper, and as was pointed out, unique. Downsides: usually more work, and often not enough material for what you want. Plus, and maybe this is just me, you quickly become a bit of a hoarder. Holding onto nice material for just the right project.

Wow, they ended up so beautifully, something that I would wear with pride if I had made that myself. Being creative is so amazing and I agree Killstar has some sick items that cost too much but the catch with Killstar is that it's not original and you see 16 girls wearing the same thing whereas DIYing can bring originality and isn't that the whole point of the goth, punk scene x
@Convoluted-and-Exiled3 жыл бұрын
Truuuue. As someone who has purchased from KillStar before, and Hottopic, that's true. I've had bad experiences with KillStars clothing anyway so I just by accessories. That's what's the most fun anyway. You can have those 16 girls all wearing the same choker but they would all still be completely different. Why I prefer accessories and finding or making something random instead for clothes. I'm all for personal expression too 👏 I mean, isn't that kind of what it's all about? (The look. I do know Goth is more about the Music and what it inspires in you.) But that's why DIY is awesome. Because the same song or band can make several people each feel something different. Subject to interpretation! And then come up with an outfit based around your mindframe inspired by the Music and your own individual self 🖤
@bonniebradyiswriting3 жыл бұрын
@@Convoluted-and-Exiled I agree. I only have three chockers from killstar which I love but it obviously does not compare to the thrill of thrifting or diy'ing some strange and unique x

Not like I'm the least bit surprised by it but you guys did an amazing job! I can't pick a favorite because every time I looked from one to the other I found something new I liked about them. Great colors and AWESOME use of upcycling! I'm not super against ready made fashion, lord knows if I had the budget, there's likely more than one thing I'm sure I'd buy from the over hyped lables the kids are using these days, but give me old days of hunting down random/cheap/old shit and making it work, then rocking the shit out of it at the clubs knowing there wasn't a CHANCE you'd run into anyone wearing even remotely the same thing as you. Also, screw that wind man! As a fellow Ontarian, Candadian weather is so rude!

Seeing both fabulous outfits has reminded me that I have a bustle skirt still to make. It's very rare that I buy off the peg Goth clothing, mainly because it doesn't fit me (I'm tall and plus size) and the prices of the pieces that I like are out of my budget. So, for me, it's thrifting and creating my own stuff and I wouldn't have it any other way. Goth is only as expensive as you make it. :)

See I would want the coat that is basically a Frankenstein creation because that means it has character and it's more durable. Second-hand and thrifting clothes a lot time have been through the wars, so it knows how to bounce back. Or it's already been "damaged" so you don't have to stress about it getting ruined. Sometimes I think when newer fast fashion they make them easy to fall apart, so we'll just replace it with a new item instead of trying to fix them.

I really want to learn to use a sewing machine..i currently sew everything by hand. Any advice on how to learn? I am 47 and have been dressing "goth" since i was 12. Most of my jewelry is handmade by me, almost all my clothes are altered by me, and i also do hair (color, extensions, dreadlocks) and i completely agree that it's way more fun to be unique and one of a kind. It's nice to see someone else out there like me though, so thank you! You are beautiful!
@MadameAbsinthe3 жыл бұрын
My best advice is to find yourself an old Kenmore, or a Singer. You can find them often at thrift stores, or on kijiji or Facebook marketplace for a reasonable price. Make sure it's in good working order before you buy it, of course. Old machines are FAR superior to new ones, in my opinion and have more power and longevity, as well as being simpler to use, once you get the hang of it. I'm a big fan of well-made old fashioned metal parts over new plastic BS, so that's why I like them. Once you have your machine, either take a few sewing classes (if you choose to do this, you can message me - I teach in person and online sewing classes), or mess around and teach yourself (which is mostly what I did). Of you want any tips or pointers, feel free to hit me up on Facebook or Instagram to ask! Hopefully that helps. The more you practice, the better you'll get! It's frustrating at first, but so rewarding
