Hi Paul, a few years ago you made me some carbon trailer wheel sockets which I use on my bike towed boat trailer. They're still working great! I've since switched to a simple steel tube and U-bolts design for my new trailers, which works fine but isn't nearly as lightweight (^;

Hi Paul, I was thinking of your trailer wheel troubles and was wondering if you've tried moving the trailer wheels back a few more feet to shift weight off of them and onto the hitch (onto the bike back wheel). The theory is that the bike back wheel is able to lean so it can handle more weight than the vertical fixed wheels on a trailer. The bike wheels don't get much side loading because they lean. The fixed trailer wheels are held vertical so they are vulnerable to massive side loading from the road lateral forces. With less weight on them the side forces will be reduced and the side mass acceleration lateral wobble leverage on them will also be reduced. My suggestion is try to move them as far back as you can and see how it goes.

Interesting and different from how I've approached it. I can't easily move the wheels on this boat but I can pack it with more weight on the tongue. Normally I aim for about 10-20% tongue weight overall.

I don't understand why you stopped using the standard bicycle wheels? it seems a lot simpler than making your own wheels

Bearings exploded after exposure to saltwater. Spokes began pulling through thin rims. Spokes lost tension because boat is so heavy. I felt the need to take everything up to a higher grade. The downhill bike rim on my carbon wheel is much thicker than the original. The bearings are double the size. The mag spokes are in column not tension.
