Making big tube bender

I needed a pipe bender for my next buggy project, so i built one! This bender wil do up to 90 degree bends without kinking the pipe. I built it from scrap, using only a drill, an angle grinder, and a welder.

Hello I have purchased your plans for a cross cart and I have a question about the tube bender you made as I am making one for the project in the plans it says to use a 6 inch center line radius bending die but the die you have seems much smaller than that what is the diameter of the die you made

My peeve is the talking preamble ("Just get to it.") and the "Ford Tough/Home Depot" rock music intros. 🙄 That's a waste of time both to watch AND havong to fast forward through. But too true on the workshop gear. I remember about 9 or 10yrs ago a fella titled a vid how to build a wood something (?) for cheap. He had a professional workshop in his dedicated garage and of course he used the equipment to build this thing "for cheap". Wtf? Scrolled down... comments were filled with jeers about it lol.

Had makita 12v -06 model. Only reason it had to dust in the corner for past few years was dead batteries. It went trough absolute hell and back from construction sites to being poverty lathe and there was barely any loose in the chuck bearings after all that abuse. Bought new Devalt and chuck was loose after mere two years being poverty lathe for fraction of the time makita had... Makita is alive again, just replaced battery with wires and it runs from car battery in the garage.

Fun fact. In the 80s a local Robert Hughes was building a racecar and was upset by how expensive tubing benders were. He decided to build his own bender just like this. He then started producing them and offered the cheapest bender in the industry. 40 years later JD2 is one of the biggest names in the game.

@@homemade_madness you might have learned it already a bit of oil on your pipe will help it threw the bender a bit so it don't stick on the die so much .. great work ,,I have a metal cutting saw chop saw style was cutting a bunch of steel for a trailer cross braces .. when I got done I had a burn hole in the plywood that the saw was sitting on ,, could of had a camp fire lol ..

Who needs fancy machinery, all you need is a cordless drill, grinder and a healthy dose of creativity, I've done the same kind of things over the years and I have the utmost respect for everything you do, you must go through a lot of cutting and grinding discs, I'm sure you could figure out a way to incorporate a small bottle jack to make the bending process a little easier, the way you made that die was outstanding, love what you do.

Damn right. Fit test respirator if you're doing this amount of grinding. Most off the shelf masks are generic and rarely fit properly. Some suppliers offer fit test for free here in the UK. Not sure about other countries.

Very creative build and I love how you used simple tools. One modification I'd add is some kind of bearings for the pivot points, as it would lessen the torque required to bend the tubing (you don't have the added friction to work against, and remember, friction increases with force applied). If you don't have access to a drill press to drill large enough holes for ball bearings, then simple brass bushings and some grease also do the trick. All you need is some brass tubing with an ID that fits the steel pivots, and a drill that is the same diameter as the OD of the brass pipe. You could also make some plastic washers for the surfaces of the plates (again, with just a drill and a hacksaw) to further decrease friction. Or if you forego the plastic washers, heating the pipe stock is also a great idea. You don't need it white hot, you can get it hot enough even with a weed burner, a slight cherry red glow is a high enough temp to drastically increase the ductility of the material.

VERY rad!! A base that does not move will make bends easier. That recovered energy will then be transfered to the center pin. Upsizing that to at least 1/2" should do the trick. And don't weld it in the die. Maybe a little tack on the ends. Very very cool diy project👍👍

@@patrickhayes3099 Doing this sort of stuff with battery drills gets tedious pretty quick though. You'll need a dozen batteries on charge, not to mention the extra wear and tear on the drill. Bet it was getting warm powering that mini lathe.

My dad and I built a 4wd tractor out of an old FWD 4wd truck. Dad wanted to upgrade the transmission from the 4 speed the truck came with to a 10 speed. In order to get the new tranny to mate to the transfer case we needed a shaft to be made so we went to a local machine shop and had them make it. Well that's what was supposed to happen. After about 9 months of "it will be ready next week" dad took what they had start and brought it home and made himself a setup very similar to what this dude is using and cut the splines into the shaft himself. Not sure why the machine shop guy couldn't do it, they had all the equipment and tooling needed to cut splines. Seeing this guy mock that grinder up made me think of it. I don't think dad used wood pretty sure he used steel. Dad was/still is very impressive with a torch. He can cut a nut off a bolt and not hurt the threads. Seen him do it many times. A torch would have saved this guy a lot of grinding.

Honestly the steel plate could have been thinner for the type of pipes that is designed for. That would make it more feasible for people other than that awesome project. Tip for bending it will help you minimize strain if you lube up the pipe before bending.

You might anneal that pipe a bit with a torch. Just soften it up a little bit. You’re off to a good start. That was a LOT of work to make a tube bender. Now you have to make a die for handlebars, frame tubes, stainless lines, and different exhausts. 😅

nice work,if you change the fixing that the pipe goes through before it gets to your die to have a little roller instead of the fix flat bar it would make bending the pipe easier as look like it was giving you resistance scrapping,hope that makes sence,still great bit of kit you made,top job
