Making (Black Gold) COMPOST From Soiled Hay Bedding

We let our animals do the heavy lifting when it comes to making compost. Goats do their best to waste and saturate hay in their shed and we use that bedding for deep liter in the chicken run. Our systems on our backyard homestead help create amazing compost to grow healthy food in our garden.

Your videos are very helpful. I have a 20x20 pen attached to our coop for eight hens. They love when I bring in a wheelbarrow of forest matter to scratch. I’ve never thought to pick all of rocks out of the chicken yard in order to create an environment for a part of a compost process.

I'm so happy we could share that "hack." It has worked amazingly for us by creating great material for compost, but also creating a healthy odor free environment for our hens. They are all too happy to do all the turning of the compost for us.

How often do you scrape out your goat shed? We have a small one with three Nigerian dwarves and we’ve been doing it weekly.

I scrape mine out every few months. We add more shavings and First Saturday Lime (or you could use DE) to create more deep bedding and then we scrape is out and put int in the compost. Currently we only have two goats that are using that space and it works well.

What do you do with the compost in the compost bin to help it breakdown? Do you need to add water, etc?

I leave it exposed to the elements, so when it rains it absorbs the water, but I’m as hands off as possible. Every few weeks if i remember I’ll take a shovel and turn it inside the compost bin.
