Lots of fun! From Richmond, Kentucky and -5f when i left for work this morning. Suppose warm up to round 60 this time next week. Watching for the quick freeze n thaw cycles. Have all my trees in Unheated greenhouse with 8+inches leaves-on top of that is 4-6inches pine bark- followed by blankets around my pots on the ground with bubble wrap also around them all. It still worries me about all the maples I have...maybe too cold n they die is the way my brain thinks, but hopefully all is well. I'll be 42 on Friday n love to meet u one day Pete.

We probably had the worst storm were' gettin this year for our region. The important thing to remember is to relax. Life isn't actually that serious. *Its like a song sung between friends...* After all is said and done, you'll end up skeleton, wave good-bye but don't you cry, our memories remain!

Great video Peter. I wondered if you could take a look at my latest video “Japanese Maple Carving” and provide your thoughts on the question at the end of the video regarding a trunk chop. Thanks and all the best.

Is Melbourne tropical or too hot for plants to thrive?
@jonawolf8023
@jonawolf8023 8 ай бұрын
it will be too hot for some species. It's easiest if you take tree species from the area. As long as the species tolerates pruning and grows relatively quickly, you can make a bonsai out of any tree.

@@jonawolf8023 I'm in Florida and my trees get afternoon shade cause they'd be crispy critters. They also stay in bigger pots.

Melbourne is a temperate climate, however there is a bit of variation depending on where you are located, in winter occasionally we see sub 4 degrees Celsius, summer can reach 40s. For the most part we can grow a wide range of species, but some additional care can be required. Personally I use a 70% non organic mix and it's fine in my location, however I have setup a watering system to help with the additional watering when required. Japanese maples, Elms, black pine, junipers a lot of the common species all grow well, however I have never had much luck with larch. Our natives are also awesome and of course grow really well.
