People seem to credit the Amen break with being the beat that started it all and you sure can't get a better example as far as how the kit was recorded and this definitely makes it the go-to source for choppage. But that beat comes from JB's Cold Sweat groove which is the first time anyone used this 'broken' kind of feel. The beat to Cold Sweat was something that Pee Wee Ellis had in his head while he was on tour as part of JB's horn section. He sang it to Fred Wesley and Maceo Parker and they basically wrote Cold Sweat on the bus in late 1968. If you speed up Cold sweat to 160 bpm and beyond you've got DnB. As you have observed with DnB drum breaks in another video all these late 60s funk beats like Cold Sweat and The Funky Drummer rely on leaving the kick drum out on the third beat of the bar. It's not until the 70s that bands like Parliament/Funkadelic put the kick drum on beat 3. Your videos are the best Fanu.

As a drummer I’m very happy to see your perspective on grooves and sounds! Helpful and refreshing. Too bad this kind of grooves are way too fast to play (for me), but they’re definitely funky/souly if slowed down!
@fanusamurai4 жыл бұрын
Yeah man! I can see it'd be too fast for a human, but I guess the charm of electronic music is its "electronicness" even in rhythm/tempo. And sure enough this type of stuff works even better around 130-140 BPM :)

Good breakdown of how to build a beat. Thanks, I appreciate it. You and dgoHn are my favorite producers drum-wise. Much more dynamics and natural sounding drums. Like I also really appreciate the over the top modern stuff, but you just can't beat the dynamics of acoustic drums. And you both do it so well.

Thank you! I've tried to put emphasis on explaining things. I actually have a teacher's degree from the university, and also got Ableton Certified in 2016. I've always wanted to be a person that can explain things in a way that's understandable. There's a lot of videos on YT where I feel some ppl proceed a bit too fast or leave things unexplained, and it's hard to learn.

The Funk kit is great for broken beats, too. To beef up the snare or kick, you can link your choice of sound for 'Flexi 1' to the snare/kick channel. Then both sounds trigger simultaneously

Thank you for this awesome as always - Can I ask what level of (global) velocity do you use when using Sampler in Ableton?

I usually just have my midi notes at full velocity if that's what you mean…and then just adjust the samples so their level is ok. Not sure if I got the Q right :) I do a bit of velocity variation with instruments where it matters like with AD2.

I'd say the genre/style you want to create should largely dictate what you want: e.g., I make jungle and hip hop, so I want to go for the more organic/soul/funk kits (and haven't got any rock kits).

@@fanusamurai ..exactly my direction..I am into breaks and jungle too..and love the old-style funky breaks..as I only can choose three in the starter, there are this options I kept an eye on: black oyster, funk, vintage dry, fairfax, soul/ RnB and modern jazz..but I cant decide wich one to go for..the funk and the vintage dry should be on the list?! should I go for the black oyster or the vintage dry as the third one? Every DNB producer before 2023: the kick and snare should NEVER play at the same time, that's just house!!!! Every DNB producer in 2023: Hey! let's put a 4 to the floor part in this track....hell why not the WHOLE track!!!!! People who listened to DNB before 2023: sad Using drum samplers to make breaks is SO MUCH FUN! I've used and loved Addictive Drums for a long time and i have most of the other big ones, like Superior Drummer (only V2 though), Steven Slate Drums 5, and the most recent metal ones, like GGD and Drumforge. What i don't understand is that the latter two brands' plugins use WAY more CPU and the sample variations don't sound nearly as natural, except for GGD Invasion which can be awesome for breaks but brutal to your CPU, even on an M1 Mac!

A lot of copyrighted material is in the database these days and gets recognized by the system. Chances are if you played a copyrighted drumloop for a few minutes in your video, it'd get flagged for playing copyrighted material, and you'd lose the monetisation at least. At some point this got crazy on Soundcloud, too, and ppl's accounts started getting strikes because of (often already existing) DJ mixes etc. So I've learned to be careful.
