If you’re using roof flashing, it’s not gonna quench anything because that stuff is pure soft leaded with no other “hardening alloys” mixed in with it. Nice mold, I need one!

I thought about the hot pot but got the lee magnum melter for melting range scraps. As far as just melting and pouring the hot pot is probably easier

Roof flashing, and plumbers lead is the purest lead you can get. It is nearly 99.4% pure and really soft. You can teat it easily by scraving it with your thumb nail. It is the best lead for muzzle loaders. Being in the roofing business for over 41 years, I've used it for casting for decades. To further purify the molten lead, just drop in a small piece of bees wax or bullet lubricant and stir the molten lead. The light weight impurities/metals come to top, then scim them off.

Put the mold on top of the lead pot for five or 10 minutes. Your castings will come out good.😊

I use my ingot mold as a lid to stop poping and splashing from hitting me or making a mess. The smoke from any wood with the scraps smokes the mold and makes it super easy to get the ingots out. Its a win win

After you've finished using the Hot Pot, how do you typically clean it or maintain it?

...so no respirator? Do the lead fumes make your brain tickle?
@dirtydan3029
@dirtydan3029 Ай бұрын
Lead doesnt make fumes until it reaches around 1000 degrees. Typical melting temperatures wont make fumes but if hes melting something like range scraps it will smoke a lot but a small fan to direct the smoke is enough to keep him safe

@@liliiachepurnova5558 I've been casting for years. Thousands of slugs every year. I cast outside without a worthless mask and in spite of all your fears my blood lead levels are very normal. I test every spring after casting, loading and shooting ALL winter. Be sure to get double vaxxed and quadruple boosted and wear that worthless mask when your alone in your car. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

You don't need a mask for casting clean lead like he is here... lead vaporizes somewhere north of 1600° F and he's somewhere around 600° +/- ... dirty range lead and the dust associated with it is when you should probably mask up if you're into that kinda thing but what I would recommend here is some long jeans, leather boots and a secure place to land that casting ladle especially having a cord to trip over lol... looks like a lead bath waiting to happen but I appreciate the info he's providing regardless

What did you do for mold prep?
@TheExplosiveGuy
@TheExplosiveGuy 3 жыл бұрын
I'll typically drop a marble size chunk of parrafin into my pot every 5-10 minutes, it fluxes the lead and if you ignite the smoke (or if it's hot enough to auto-ignite) you can hold your mold open over the flames, get a nice black layer of soot inside all the channels. A hot mold is definitely more crucial though, the soot just helps a little.

@@TheExplosiveGuy thanks. I just did a session with my Lee 00 mold. I've been tumbling daily. I'm at my bugout which is off grid and I can only tumble when the sun is shining so it takes me a few days to do a batch. Yesterday I figured out how to make PDX12's. I'm having a literal blast casting and loading. Thanks for the tips.

@@sluggou812beotch Any time, and good luck with your reloading endeavors😉. BTW, how much luck have you been having getting all three chambers filled with that Lee? I've got their aluminum #00 mold myself and I have to keep that mold piping hot for all three to fill, I'm actually considering attaching a small heating element to it because of how hard it is to keep the aluminum hot. I definitely prefer steel molds over aluminum because of that issue...

@@TheExplosiveGuy I have a Lee pro 420 furnace that I keep on about 8 on the temp dial. I takes awhile to warm up before it fills all three then I go like hell. I also bought a Marty's Arms mold but I haven't tried it yet due to the fact that I got bored one day and started hand rubbing a finish on it and it's too pretty to mess up now. I'm thinking about donating it back to him so he can use it in pics for his website.
