Lynn Doughty is one of the best wood carvers imaginable. He does most of his masterpieces with a utility knife.

I’m not sure why people are saying these blades won’t work? They’re high carbon, I’ve been using them for years. At work I drag them across nails and cement. I think I’ve only snapped one and that’s because I was prying a paint lid with it. The only issue with carving is that they are wide and it’s hard to do a sweep cut, but this solves that issue. How did it hold up?

Nice job, it's nice to have something you use that you can say you made your self.

Very good. With your finished knife, you cut with the grain and did not demonstrate how it cuts across the grain, which is the usual standard cut to see if the knife is sharp enough (or the fingernail test). I enjoyed watching you work on it.

That was a nice job but those kinds of blades won't keep the next very long. Once it's beyond sharpening, and him epoxying the blade in, you can now throw the whole thing away.

Perhaps you missed the point. Those blades will last far longer than you seem to think. Ive been making woodcarving knives from utility knife blades for years. If you keep them stropped they can go for months. And then, yes, toss it into the forge and it can become fuel. Building these little knives is so simple and easy that worrying about them is needless.

(KNIFE HANDLE) Why not cut out the basic shape with a saw then clean it up with the sanding tool
