I'm not very experienced in chemistry so just tell me if this wouldn't work, but why didn't you form the hydrochloric acid and chromium trioxide in two separate reactions and then combine them? I'm a huge fan by the way, I've seen almost all of your videos :)
@nicholasbeck26497 жыл бұрын
Chromium trioxide is a solid and hydrochloric acid is a gas, so to effectively combine them you'd need to dissolve them in something like water to combine them. But like he said in the video, water stops the reaction from performing efficiently. Also making the chemicals would require a lengthier process which would also hurt the yield. Making everything in the reaction flask like this is a lot more efficient and also easier to deal with.

Cons in AR warm, increments nitric and HCl till no reaction, filter rinse, back in pot hot to denox add HCl twice then water, stir in zinc filter precip rinse, dry then take precip put in hot HCl 24 hrs, filter rinse real good, then put precip into nitric/water hot 24 hrs filter and melt with oxy/acet torch. Not worried about silver loss, I am after the gold and pgm's. Zinc drops all metals, then HCl soak and Nitric soak to remove all junk metals, but gold and pgm's. Is this process correct?

Hey! I have a question that I thought you might be able to answer regarding the naming of compounds. I understand that transition metals form multiple ions, such as Iron (II) Chloride vs Iron (III) Chloride, but what would be the difference between say, ferric chloride, iron chloride, etc? Is ferric chloride just another way to say iron chloride? Or as another example, mercuric oxide vs mercury oxide? My chem teacher sort of blew off the question, with the whole, "It's not important" or the "you don't need to know that for this test", yet I am curious!!
@NileRed8 жыл бұрын
+Ben Sullivan It's basically just that because of different oxidation states, like you said, you can have Iron (II) or Iron (III) for example. If you use the term iron, you need to specify (II) or (III). The terms "ferric" and "ferrous" are terms that refer to the oxidation state. So if you say "ferric chloride," it's the same as iron (III) chloride and ferrous chloride = iron (II) chloride.
@bensullivan4208 жыл бұрын
Ah, thank you very much!! That makes sense. Keep up the awesome videos!

Why didn't you just add hydrochloric acid directly rather than making it indirectly from table salt and sulphuric acid? Is HCl of a concentration similar to the sulphuric acid difficult to source or store?
@Kryptargon5 жыл бұрын
Hydrochloric acid is just HCl gas dissolved in water. You can't really get to much higher concentrations than 42%. The aqueous HCl that you can get, for example online, normally has a concentration of up to 36-38%. So you shouldn't use it in this case, since all the water would react with the chromyl chloride. I believe you would have to use HCl in its water free gas form to avoid this (Honestly I don't know if that would work, it is just a guess). Sulfuric acid doesn't have this problem because it is actually a liquid at room temperature. Concentrated (~98%) H2SO4 can easily be isolated and stored. In those high concentrations it is also very hygroscopic, which means that it has the ability to absorb any water created in the reactions. Please correct me if I said anything wrong. I'm definitely no expert on this.
@Eedelia018 жыл бұрын

The Potassium Dichromate used in the video looks a lot like Ammonium Dichromate in color and crystal shape. Does it ignite and shoot sparks like a flare like Ammonium Dichromate does?
@slateflash8 жыл бұрын
+stonent no, because it's the ammonium ion(NH4+) part of the ammonium dichromate that causes that reaction to happen because it leads to the formation of nitrogen gas, which is one of the products. This reaction happens as formation of the products is favoured(in terms of enthalpy and entropy changes). Potassium dichromate also decomposes when heated but probably less readily(due to less entropy of the products) and the products of decomposition are different.
@RobertSzasz8 жыл бұрын
I assume like with most metal waste, neutralizing the Ph, and evaporating water (if the dried products aren't likely to decompose in an interesting manner) and then handing the waste off to a commercial waste handling company is the easiest way to deal with things?
