Looks like the slot was made with a regular drill. That would mean the bottom of the slot is not flat? Isn't it rather important to have it flat?

Guess you never too wood shop in school - fingers never closer than 4" from cutting device!

Of course to be careful, yet some people are smart enough not to put their fingers in the cutting device no matter how close. Be safe, but more important, don't be stupid!!!

great work, watch out that chisel and your fingers, don't put it on the way of your chisel, I am talking on personal expertise :(
