Good vid. That was sure a lot of snares and you have the process down really well. I use my old cast iron casting pot from my black powder days, slower but it's what I have. I'm using some old bags of lead shot from my shooting days. It isn't nearly as clean so I have to skim more then you. Thanks for the info and you gave me ideas to improve my system. Can't wait for the next video, I like the way your snare lines sit better then mine! I like your lid hinges better too. They open and close better then most of the snares I have seen. Even the ones sold in stores and on-line!

Thanks Gene! Took me a couple of months to get the process down, but eventually, I got it the way I want it. The next video will focus on the loops. That video will come out soon. Thanks for always supporting brother!

you can make a mold out of plaster of Paris or Bondo (use on cars) to make a lead mold for your cages. Just have to make a form (out of clay, etc) for the bottom and have a slight dip/thicker side to make that part of the mold heavier side (more lead). Once the form is made you can pour plaster of Paris or Bondo on it and let it dry 24 hrs or so. you can use the mold over and over again better than the drywall sheet.

Great video. Appreciate all your vids and making crabbing fun and exciting. Trying to get my kids involved (all girls) for some reason getting up at 4-5am and out the door is not popular with them..

That’s so smart I been use ready mix concrete…. $5 a bag makes 1000’s of weights. No heat. Mix it pour in make shift foil and set the cage in it .

At 7:28, are those pieces of sheet rocks you used to cast the lead onto your snares?

Very nice .I cast my own bullets so I have all the lead melting equipment. Are the molds made out of drywall sheets. Great job in keeping expenses down .
@TheJoyofLiving

Hey Larry. Appreciate the support brother. Yes, that is drywall. I have a custom made mold that I use now, but drywall is the best option for those who don't want to invest into custom made molds. CRAB ON!

I doubt your mask filters out lead fumes . Lead fumes will mess you up real bad. Safety goggles are also something that's a must. Be safe !

First off I'm getting excited, I was just out going over my rods and reels. I'm going to make up a few more snares just because. The regs say the season opens on November 7th so we will be out to the secret spot on the 9th and 10th!! I got a truck tent so I figure I will spend the night and get up early so we can get in another full morning of crabbing. Did I miss something? Did you ever make the 4th video?? I can't locate it?? Are you still working your posterior off? Gene

I'm thinking about buying a few from you, how much do you charge? Which one you like more? The longer (more rectangular ones) or the squared ones? Also, instead of throwing them with a fishing rod I think I'm gonna try throwing them on a hand line from a pier or a bridge, so which one is better for that?

another great vid! Where do you get your lead?
@TheJoyofLiving
@TheJoyofLiving 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Tim! I get my lead at Alco Iron & Metal Company. They are located on the corner of Davis Street and Doolittle in San Leandro. Their lead used to be $1.60 per pound, but I think the price went up since then. I try to buy lead that are less than $2 per pound when it comes in 50lb bricks. Anything more than $2 per pound, I would look somewhere else for better pricing.

It's not a bad idea, but the more lead you pour into the snare, the less bait you can get in there.

Please be safer bro! Wear nitrile or latex gloves when handling lead ingots even for demonstrations (welding gloves during melting/pouring) and most of all, use a proper and specific 3M respirator that filters lead fumes...learn how to use/fit/test a respirator properly. I work with resins, paints and polymers for a living...don’t cut any corners in this arena!

Question ? How do you know that its going too hit bottom lead side down. And won't roll over or be pushed by in or out going tide. This matters because I fish between two jetties where Tidal coifeccient surge is a huge factor..
@TheJoyofLiving
@TheJoyofLiving 3 жыл бұрын
I believe objects falling will land heavy side down first. Therefore, the snare should land with the weight on the sand. Once the snare lands on the sand, it tends to burry itself a couple cm down. Holding the snare in place. The snare is so far at the bottom that the waves and tides does not affect the snare. The undertow can play a major affect if it is too strong. 6oz snares can stand up to roughly 6-7ft swells without moving around. 8oz snares can stand up to 8-9ft swells 5oz snare w/ a 5oz sinker or 8oz snare with a 3oz sinker can stand up to 10-12ft swells. If the undertow is too strong and pushing the snare around, attach a Spider Sinker and that will help keep the snare in place. Anything above 14ft swells or a very strong undertow is not worth crabbing. The MOON's SNARES are so effective is because I understand your issue very well. I believe a bigger surface area on the lead will keep the snare in place and prevent from rolling. Even if it rolls up side down, the snare is still effective. Hope this helps. I appreciate the support!
