In this vid we show how to make beautiful decorative wooden spirals using a cool Sears Craftsman Router Crafter. Three different designs are made and much more shown. JC Torres makes modified router bits from existing materials like spade bits and Roman ogee moulding bits. We are working on more woodworking vids in the future like the gorgeous S-shape pattern as seen in end of this vid.
Check out Sears Craftsman Router Crafter Model No. 720.25251 assembly & operating manual. This 18 page manual will be a great starting point in understanding this cool router lathe machine! Vintagemachinery.org has a printable pdf copy of the manual if interested!
Please watch the UPDATE VIDEO (Decorative Wooden Spirals Using Router Crafter Become Much More!) showing how we made a 52 inch spiral floor lamp, 32 inch spiral table lamp, three DOUBLE ukulele stands that hold soprano, concert, tenor OR baritone ukuleles, plus we made a three piece spiral Trinity candlestick holder set, mini table and 40 inch medium bar table! Plus more!
Thanks for watching!! 🙏

I hate videos where people talk you to death. This was not one of those videos. MY favorite wood working video on UT. I have been around the block 58 yrs and I has seen a thing or two. When you make me feel amazing then YOU are amazing. This video to me was smooth, easy, relaxing, claim, and simple awesome. I am going to have to thief your style when I finally make a channel. Safety, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. If you do not understand it the first time you read it then read it over and over till you get it and practice it. Blessed day to all of you.

I just finished building the handrail on my deck kzbin.infoUgkxfQ5_mgwq6PcudJvAH25t-I4D-3cTPz4z and used this great little router to clean up the top rail before the final sanding and stain. It was light weight but packed lots of power. Either size battery didn't seem to make it top heavy and I'm a 64 yr old women so I really appreciated how easy it was to use...................... CORDLESS only way to go !!

Great video, I as well bought one off of e bay 15 years ago because I got all my dads old tools and in the Sears manual for accessories I saw the Router crafter and rememberd as a kid with my Dad we thought that would be fun to have. Dads no longer with us, but now I know how to use it, Dad would have loved all these U tube videos, so helpfull thank you . Looking forward to the new updates.

Hello Brian, thanks for watching and subscribing! That is awesome you kept your Dads old tools cuz so many people sadly sell them or give it away when a family or friend passes. It’s so difficult to find Sears Craftsman Router Crafters used online now so glad you bought one 15 years ago when there was a bit more in circulation. Great that you figured out how to use it and we are very happy to help! Righteous & Awesome you are passing on the traditions of these great tools and machines that most people today take for granted! We are posting a follow up video to the decorative wooden spirals video in less than a week. We made three musical instrument stands, two tables, a three piece candlestick holder trinity set, two fully functional lamps and more from the decorative wooden spirals we produced in the first video. Stay tuned! Thanks very much again Brian and cheers to you and ur Dad! 💥👍🏼🤠😎👍🏼💥

@@a1customfabsolutions I bough it new in the mid 70's never really used it much but saw the potential so much so that in 2004 I bought a Legacy 1200 Ornamental Mill thats loosely based on the Craftsman Router Crafter but can literally turn circles around it. Now age has taken its toll and I'm looking to sell both "machines" so I don't burden my wife with my woodworking and woodturning tool collection when I'm gone, actually Legacy has quite a very active following and the Router Crafter has suddenly become sought after.

Hello Michael, Thanks for the response, We bought our Sears craftsman router crafter from a very cool retired guy who was downsizing his shop as well! I think he bought it new in the mid 70’s and used it but took great care of it and even made a simple bench for it. Yes, those Legacy Ornamental Mills are super excellent woodworking machines on another level than the router crafters from Sears! It’s amazing the culture around the Legacy mills. You should find some buyers for both machines easily, and quickly! Everything is CNC nowadays so it’s great to keep these “vintage” machines around to show the youth that before computers everybody used a slide rule and drafting board not CAD! It’s nice to meet people like you who are knowledgeable about the topic. Take care and hope your 2023 goes very well Sir! Sincerely, All @ A1CFS

Brilliant and very creative. I really liked the cable adjustment (micro adjustment?) and innovative tools that JC has made. I bought a broken Trend version last year and repaired it and made a few lamps. At the time there were only a couple of videos on this tool, so its nice to see something new. By thinking out of the box I did manage to create spirals of varying thickness in the same workpiece, which can create interesting effects and add another dimension to a project. Sanding was a bit of a pain though. Will be sure to check out your other videos. Thanks

Fun tool. You can do this on a 2x2, 3x3 or what have you without rounding it for an interesting effect. Another thing you can do is, cut patterns out for the rider post to follow and, with the cable moving free, do a bit of lathe like work. EDIT: I see, at the end, you did the square pieces too.

@@a1customfabsolutions, I saw you playing with a regular lathe too. I had a little 1014 Jet, so was limited in what I could do. To make walking sticks, I started playing with mortise and tenons and it worked out very well. In fact, the limits of my little machine not only made me think of solutions, those solutions often allowed me to increase detail options. So, when are you going to stack a few of these puppies? SIDE NOTE: I presume it would be best to do at least the tenon first, since the finished product may try to move a bit back out of round, and the tenon would not pose a real problem when mounting it on the Crafter.

@a1customfabsolutions
@a1customfabsolutions Жыл бұрын
Hello Frank Thanks for watching, liking and subscribing! We appreciate it big time! Yes the capacity to carry weight is diminished quite a bit when taking so much material away when routing and cutting. However, in a few of our other vids we show how we drilled holes through the center of the spirals utilizing a lathe & put 3/8” threaded rod/conduit through the center to make DIY electric lamps from the decorative spirals. Also we made a small table so we also put a piece of 3/8” solid steel rod which definitely strengthens up the decorative wooden spirals a bit. For sure they are more for decorative use if the decorative wooden spiral has very thin center stem and overall spirals. Several coats of tung oil and or lacquer helps slightly strengthen and protect too…. Its difficult to put an exact number …. 30-50% reduction possibly if we had to put down some mathematics. Thanks again Sir! Have fun with ur woodworking adventures! Sincerely, JR from A1CFS 😎🛠⚙️🗜👍🏼🪚🔨🪛🧰🤠

SIDE NOTE: I bought my Crafter about fifteen years ago, at a garage sale. It was mint, until I got it home and dropped it, breaking one of the pulleys. Talk about panic. Finding a new pulley would have been a challenge. Then it dawned on me I have hole saws and plexi. I made a circle the diameter of the original, then made two larger ones. A bit of CA glue later and the Crafter has been back in business all those years since.

Glad you fixed ur router crafter and got it back in business! The router crafter we have is about 35 or 40 years old and the plastic pulleys are becoming brittle. So we may have to fabricate some mini pulleys from 6061 aluminum. It will be a fun project. Maybe in the summer of 2021! JC Torres, our senior Carpenter and fabricator, has made these crafters from scratch and even improved the design in some regard! We are working on an update video so please stay tuned and thanks very much! Hava great 2021!

There’s one for sale near me at the moment that’s why I’m here to see if they are worth the money. Some things can be a bit chintzy or gimmicky and not worth the trouble or money. But this looks like it could be a useful workshop tool. I would like to ask you one question though. As the router depth is controlled by adjustable bolts on a guide rail, could you place a template on the guide rail and have the router follow the highs and lows of the profile as you wind it along the length of the spindle. Thanks, great video 👍

Hello Richard! Thanks for watching and commenting! Hopefully you purchased the router crafter that you found for sale! They are difficult to find these days! Garage sales, estate sales, and flea/used gear markets are great places to start! If you have basic carpentry skills it is very possible to build your own custom version! Our senior master carpenter has made half a dozen router lathe machines the last 40 years and sometimes it’s better to fashion one for your own specific needs. Yes you Can absolutely utilize a template follower with the Sears Craftsman Router Crafter! It’s easy and fun! We will demonstrate in a future video! Have fun with your woodworking adventures! Sincerely A1CFS 🤠😎🛠🗜👍🏼🙏

How small can you go with that router lathe? Somebody gave me a bunch of pen blanks (some are standard 3/4 x 5" and others are 1 x 6") and I have no interest in turning them into pens but just wondering if could work them in this machine (in some creative way) or do you think that they are too small and that the router bit would chew it up. Thanks much! Subscribed!

Hello and thanks for watching, commenting AND subscribing Rob. Yes, it is possible to put a workpiece as small as 1/2” in diameter in the Sears Craftsman Router Crafter. All that is needed is a modified drive spindle to compliment the bell shaped factory drive spindle near the headstock. This is a simple wood and metal custom fabricated drive spindle that sits inside the factory drive spindle. The custom fabricated drive spindle is threaded on one end to allow a small drive center to be positioned so a workpiece as small as 1/2” inch diameter can be worked. We are working on a short and sweet video showing how we made a custom modified drive spindle for the Sears Craftsman Router Crafter using a 1/2” inch square metal bar and a small piece of 2x6” pine wood. Our senior fabricator JC Torres has made multiple modified drive spindles as well as drive centers. It’s a simple great way to make a Sears Craftsman Router Crafter more versatile. Stay tuned and thanks again Rob! JR @ A1CFS 🙏🤠😎👍🏼

I’ve got Just a small suggestion. When he stops at the end of each pass it seems to cause some issues as he goes to turn it off and reposition. Maybe try a foot power switch. That way your less likely to shake the router. I have a lot of spasms and uncontrollable movements and have used one for a few different things. You plug the switch into the wall and the router into it, you turn the router power switch to on and then tap the foot switch to turn it on or off. A cheap example would be the switch on a power strip. Best of luck, I love spiral wood ornaments I just wish I didn’t suck at them. Lol. Have you tried doing Celtic knot/braided patterns yet with this sort of setup?

So, you obviously are a master at your trade. Or, at least the guy who is doing the work in this video. I'm just a guy who would love to get into woodworking. I've acquired quite a few tools for my garage in hope that I will be able to get into this as a hobby. And I'm about to purchase this crafter in a few days. However, when I go to your channel's page, you do not have a website. I mean no offense, but you are missing out on a huge opportunity. If he can create router bit mods and jigs for this machine, or even recreate this machine as a whole, then you should be selling these. I would buy all of them right now. I'm sure you are selling your products, but you could be making so much more on the back end of this. Please reach out to me, if you have any interest in discussing this further?

@@a1customfabsolutions extremely expensive, but probably the best on the market. I think theirs does 3-D as well so that’s adds to the cost, but capabilities. I met the guys who own it a long time ago in in Sacramento at a show. Really nice guys making an excellent product. You can find the mills on eBay and probably Craig’s list and you might be able to call Legacy and ask if they could give you a list of customers who might be interested in selling theirs. However, you seem to be doing just fine with a simple router. Perhaps you should consider manufacturing your design giving people an affordable option??? You probably already know that you can buy pretty much all the components off Amazon to build a rail system and carriage. Anyway, I’m impressed with your ingenuity and ability to make something spectacular with the modest of tools.

@@a1customfabsolutions Thank you for your response. I have seen spirals made on a CNC and was intrigued when I came across your You Tube doing similar but manually. Regarding helpful videos have a look at ‘Tubes done by This Old Tony, Roger Webb, Cnc Nutz, cooking videos, etc to get ideas. A tripod is a very handy item. Your particular process can be “paused” then reposition your camera and “resume” the video. The camera “technique” in your video is more suited to music videos also virtually all hand held cameras as well as phones have a “steady cam” feature that eliminates hand shaking. Hopefully this may be helpful. I will keep an eye out for more of your projects. Regards.
