It is a very typical breakfast, lunch, or even dinner food to have as a Chinese from Malaysia and I AM SO HAPPY YOU GUYS ARE TRYING THIS! Typically, it can be eaten with chicken or pork. You can have it with an egg any way you like it. For my family, we will normally immediately add it into the congee, so it is like mixed with the rice and the rest. Ginger is a best friend of Congee HAHA (for me personally because it is so good!)

congee is such a staple in Chinese cuisine! I usually have it when I’m sick since it’s such a good comfort food but nice to have when you don’t know what to eat. Best paired with crispy fried sticks 😋

I'm Chinese American congee is also known as rice porridge, so it has a kinda thick porridge/oatmeal consistency. It's normally eaten for lunch so Turning Red's version is a bit Americanized, but still looks pretty tasty :)

Good rule of thumb is 5 cups of water (or chicken stock) to 1 cup of uncooked rice and stir every 15-20 minutes until it’s thickened.

Grew up eating this!! I’m soo excited that you had a chance to try this! Instead of chicken, my mum would normally put Pink Ling fish fillets which taste soo good. Totally agree with it being a comfort food! It’s also the best food to eat when you’re feeling unwell.

Eating congee literally every day of my life in every different form... I really recommend you guys to try the congee with century egg and minced pork (my favorite) or experiment with different types of rice and colors, like black rice or purple rice congee is really yummy with add ins like datils or peanuts. It's sweet.

congees are my favorite comfort foods, my mom usually makes them for me when I'm sick. It's warm and healthy, especially with that ginger in there.

Porridge (or lugaw in tagalog) is plain congee and Arroz Caldo is a flavor or type of porridge that is made with chicken and rice. Arroz caldo is so good! Specially when it's paired with boiled ducks egg. It's a famous breakfast here in the Philippines. We often paired it with either boiled duck's egg (penoy in tagalog), fried tofu, and pork. Can also be dipped in mixed/homemade sweet vinegar sauce! “Arroz caldo” is a Spanish name, but the dish’s origins are Filipino - it is an adaptation of a congee that was created by Chinese-Filipino immigrants. (Saw this on google).

Porridge is oats and milk cooked together in a saucepan to make a slightly wet consistency and is a is very yummy. You can make it with whatever milk you want or if you want you can cook it with water too. Some people cook it in the microwave too for 3 minutes. The oats are supposed to soak up the liquid and for a slight weird lumpy texture and form. I recommend porridge with honey and to top it off with any type of nut and fruit you love

Porridge (or congee) was my daily breakfast meal back in Guangzhou. It's part of our culture to enjoy a hot boil of soup, noodles, or porridge sided with something else for our breakfast, and then its afternoon tea!

Just a tip I’ve heard. Stir the rice continually so it doesn’t stick to the bottom of the container and heats evenly. Eventually the rice absorbs the water.
