Making blast gates is a good idea. Nice and easy to make, and better performing than the bought stuff. Great way to control your dust extraction airflow. I will be doing exactly the same when I move to a bigger workshop. Right now, 3/4 of the machine I use are mobile and it makes more sense just to switch hoses at this point. Thanks for the pointers Keith! Love seeing your new workshop come to life. Cheers, Craig

I started off with the bought ones. Soon realised the were rubbish. So like you I have made my own. I used Ply for the outer parts and floor laminate for the slider. Works really well. The other thing I did rather than throwing out the cheap plastic ones was to pull them apart and hot glue them onto the ply. This gave me the perfect flange size to fit over the pipe.

Nice video and informative. If you just start the hole saw to mark the outline, then drill a relief hole touching the inside of the mark, this will give a place for the cuttings to fall out. I've used this trick I saw elsewhere & it really helped. Just FYI.

Very satisfying to see the snug fit. Looking forward to seeing the video on the pipes!

Hiya. I make my blast gates the same way with a small tweak. Adding a chamfer to the gate on the router table before gluing the pipe gives a better hold. Keep up the good work!

Saw a much more complex method to build them, and with 10 to build I went "meh". Your design is simple and efficient. One note on terminology. I'm not stating that I'm correct, only what I was trained in the Navy. Valves are never "on and off" only open and closed. Great video. I will be duplicating, but using plywood for the reason specified. I did cut 12 brackets for my main header, and had to use a carbide tipped hole saw. That made quick work of the wood brackets. I think I'll look to find a carbide tipped saw for this as well.

Hi Keith, I've had the same issue with MDF and hole saws. I drilled a hole (right through) inside the the outer edge of the hole, allowing a good proportion of the dust to fall downwards. It made all the difference. Too late now, but might be useful for the future.

I've seen people suggest drilling holes tangential and on the inside of the diameter you are trying to cut with a hole saw - to give the sawdust somewhere to escape to. Could be worth trying.

The loose fitting of the cheap ones isn't "as much" of a problem as it might seem, since as long as they're not warped, they will be pulled in and seal when there's negative pressure.
@RagnBoneBrown5 жыл бұрын
But if they're being pulled shut surely that's suction energy that is wasted, unnecessary affecting performance

I bought blast gates from axminster and they have worked fine. Can"t remember the price but I guess buildning them from scrap mdf is probably cheaper.

I'm just in the process of doing the same using 68mm piping rather than 63mm etc can't wait to see how you have made some of the connections etc

It looks like your using heat shrink to join the pipes?

Hi, can I ask why you moved from the 40mm pipe you had in your previous workshop? currently installing a system and at the stage I need to decide on pipe size? Cheers

That must have taken a little while without drilling any relief holes before using the hole saw... Nice make on the gates though, mate. 👍🏽

What are the measurements for the blast gates (dimensions etc) thanks.

Is that a keyfob / wireless relay combo Keith? If it is be very, very careful. I came home from work one day, all I could smell was acrid smoke. Eventually tracked it down to my shed and the wireless relay. It had failed and melted the case and was merrily smoking away. Probably only a few minutes from a firey mess.

In case you don't know already, PVC pipe can build up a large static electric charge from the particles rubbing against inside of the pipe. By large charge, think enough to kill someone!!! To get round this, screw a piece of ground wire to the pipes, making sure the screw goes all the way through the wall of the pipe. Then attach the ground wire to your workshop/home electricity ground system. Problem solved 😁 It looks like you're building a sweet dust collection system there, I look farward to seeing the 3rd video 👍👍👍👍👍

This is false information. It has been debunked many times. Although usually the claim is that it will cause a fire, not shock and kill you. search for "Grounding PVC and Other Dust Collection Myths" for a good writeup on woodweb about it.
