I've had many requests to make a bunch of dovetail mallets to sell and I FINALLY found the perfect material to make a batch.
This is one of the tools that I am looking to regularly produce in the future. For the time being, the initial batches will only be available to my top patrons as a thanks for their continued support to the channel. They provide the closest thing I have to a predictable income so it means a lot to me when someone pledges!

use the internal measuring part of the calipers to measure the hole in the head of the mallet rather than the Forsner bit, that way any wobble in your pillar drill will not upset the handles

I have to mallets. Both of the heads are made from glued two by fours, and the handle is made from a broken snow shovel handle. One has the plastic hand gripe on the end. Quite beautiful. I was thinking of send one to Matthew, but I didn't want to show him up.

Vernia is a great tool but no for all ops. Im a metal machinist. If youre looking for a push fit invest in a box of slips and use old school calipers. So measure with vernia, build a slip pile and include extra for your fit (i cant speculate for timber) then work to that on the lathe. Just an idea pal, enjoy your vids keep up the good work.

Just a thought: I've noticed my forstner bits almost always cut a VERY slightly larger hole than what their diameter measures as. I suspect runout of my quill or the stock moving, or a bunch of other stuff. Just an idea as to why the tenon might have been smaller than the mortise. Good looking work bud!
@monophoto1
@monophoto1 4 жыл бұрын
I've had a similar problem. But I've also noticed that my Forstner bits are very slightly tapered. The hole diameter is at least as large as the larger diameter of the bit, but if turn the tenon to a diameter that matches a measured slightly smaller diameter, the tenon will be a bit loose.
