Yes, 4x4 would be an easier option than sandwiching 2x4's, I just like to complicate things 😂

I would say yes. It's works fine for everything I work on, but it did seem to struggle a little when I was putting a lot of pressure on that Oak. It's on par with my Harbor Freight sander that I've been using for years. It just has a few more bells and whistles.
