Brilliant idea and fantastic build. The only design change I would make it to have a press button, and put it on the top button, so that turning it on doesn't nudge it out of place.

Awesome build! Tacking parts together to drill perfectly aligned holes without lots of measuring seems genius! I had no idea you could get such powerful magnets out of car AC motors! I will have to look into this!! Hole saw at 13:21 looked red hot!! now wire that power supply to the motor on the drill so that when you turn the drill on, the vise locks, and when you turn the drill back off it releases!

Good idea. I wonder if it would hold for slot and milling cutters? Might be an idea to put a thin sheet of plastic under the magnet to make it easier to remove steel and iron shavings and dust. I guess they would build up into a messy pile.

When I am at home, I will make accurate measurements because I don't remember at the moment
@glennmoreland64574 жыл бұрын
From what I can tell you've got them electro-magnets wired in series... They need to be wired in parallel...so they're both working at the same potential... Don't forget: Currents divide PROPORTIONALLY in parallel... The voltage stays substantially the same... But I like the concept...🇬🇧☺️
@WorkshopFromScratch4 жыл бұрын
Thank you:) As I wrote in the description, the electromagnets are connected in parallel :) The serial connection lowered their power
@glennmoreland64574 жыл бұрын
@@WorkshopFromScratch Ok sorry... I didn't read that bit... The reason series lowered the power is due to voltage drop across the loads...🇬🇧☺️

as long as it doesn't get on the mains part of the power supply, which is a totally separate unit its fine, if it shorts the power supply will shut off and the vice will loose grip but its not going to happen with those magnets. my only observation about it is if it gets into the switch its going to bugger up the contacts

Very nice idea. I'm now curious if that drilling setup is solid enough to drill a hole with a hole saw that didn't have a centre drill in it? I've tried it with 52mm hole saws a few times, and even some quite heafty drill presses can't keep the cutter in the same spot on the workpiece. The initial uneven tooth load on the cutter tries to walk it across the metal being cut, and rattles the whole press. :)
@WorkshopFromScratch3 жыл бұрын
Such a vice is convenient and practical for drilling, but you need to be especially careful with holesaws over 40 mm.

If you create plans for some of these projects, I'd venture to say you could make some money selling them.
