Well done, mate! first time hearing about pillararenes! Although I'm an inorganic chemist, I can see a great potential in these

its basically a "simplified" cyclodextrin, which are used in drug delivery and food processing already for quite some time. And you can also modify them very intensively.

These look really promising for future medicine and pharmacology; I think it's fascinating that we'll be able to hide "stowaway" drugs within the pillararene to sneak it through the blood brain barrier, like some kind of chemical Trojan horse lol
@redphoenix1202 жыл бұрын
yeah its an odd thought. the only usage i can think of though is like when you have something like loperamide which is known to be a full mu-opioid agonist in the myenteric plexus in the gut which makes it effective for incontinence but it cant cross the BBB. So if put in a pillararene, which isnt swept away by enzymes like P-glycoproteins or monoamine oxidase, it could be used in a different way than normal. But obviously used with something more practical and useful.

Nice work, well done. But I think you should provide melting point analysis or sth like that (if NMR is out of reach) to prove the final product. Because directly writing pillar[6]ene was seemed a little bit self-righteous.

For the mechanism, isn’t it some sort of friedel crafts reaction followed by a dehydration ? Idk about the template effet though bc no pi stacking is possible
@marcomenghini327 Жыл бұрын
Looked into it a bit looks like it’s just inclusion of chlorohexane (during the closing of the ring) that yields the 6 over the 5. I suppose the polarity of ClCy is key bc to have the pillar5arene they use 1,2-dichloroethane

They didn't shorten the name to pillarene, that is just disappointing. But since the nomenclature is free, I propose pillarenes be actual pillars, like at least two layers of pillar[n]arene rings on top of each other. Kinda like a shitty short carbon nanotube. Then if we close the tubes with a flat top like a benzene ring we can have pillar-pillarenes. If we close them with "rounder" caps like a trialkylamine we can have pill-pillarenes. In a general case I propose pillarenes to be relatives of carbon nanotubes which lack conjugation along and/or around the tube. IUPAC, get on it! Make it canon.
