These dice are adorable, although most of the lemonade I'm used to is lighter and cloudy. But they get the vibe across. :) BTW: the fruits are made of Fimo or similar, which is a polymer clay, not foam. So they're clay fruits, less alliterative, more accurate. 😉

Had you considered adding the “ice” in a second partial pour and then covering it with a final pour? That way they could “float” a bit yet still be contained? You could wait till the second layer had started to thicken before adding the “ice” if you wanted precise placement. Of course, matching the resin color gets tricky with a third pour.
@Rybonator
@Rybonator 2 жыл бұрын
That's not a bad idea, just simply doing 3 pours - The only issue is then it can float to the sides which would ruin the dice if silicone sticks to an edge :(
@foldionepapyrus3441
@foldionepapyrus3441 2 жыл бұрын
I was thinking along the same lines with the restrain it with resin, was leaning more towards a UV cure resin drop if it matches the epoxy used enough visually. Though I also wondered if putting a deliberate void/pattern into the resin die chunk and then dripping fresh clear silicon into it could work - it would then suction in really well to the texture of that die chunk and as silicon sticks to itself (at least without mould release) really really well you can drop your chopped up crushed ice silicon on top of those now filled voids. So this might be a job for a vacuum casting system - pull all the air out of the mixed resin before you do that first pour, then deliberately introduce bubble or textures to the top face of that cast afterwards for the little silicon drips to be dripped into - shouldn't matter much if its really quite bad on the top, your next resin pour will be so close in refractive index and the voids hopefully small enough that its just softening the colour to clear resin transition a bit.

They came out pretty good but had a few voids, flashing, and the mold started to deteriorate because I forgot to cast my cap in the pot. Have overall decided that Etsy molds are high quality and relatively affordable, do you think there's anything specifically that I should look for? (leaning cap or cap-sprue)
@Rybonator
@Rybonator 2 жыл бұрын
I have been going for more cap molds lately, as they allow for easy inclusions like this :) Sprue however are far more beginner friendly, if you are willing to do the small bit of extra clean up. I think either is fine, but if you plan on doing a lot of inclusions, go cap :)

I made some giant iced americano dice for my DM. I used a silicone miniature ice cube tray to cast resin ice cubes - they were half clear, and half barely tinted white resin slightly swirled so that they would show up in the dice really well. Then I stuffed my molds once the ice cubes had cured, and poured in resin that was half colored to look like really dark coffee, and the other half clear (since an americano is espresso added to water). I hoped the resin ice cubes would help alleviate any balance issues since in theory they would be the same density as the rest of the dice. 😊 They came out good, certainly not perfect, but my DM loves them! Also: Thank you for all your videos and tutorials! You’re my go-to for learning to make dice molds and dice. 😊

idea: you could fill the molds with the lemonade part first and then do the clear part. counteracts the surface tension problem because this time it's the right way around, and you wouldn't have to find a working glue anymore because the pieces would be allowed to float up. essentially, just reverse the gravity.
@RyeTaran
@RyeTaran 2 жыл бұрын
Beautiful! I think that lighter yellow for the numbers really helped to tie the whole scheme together! To what you mentioned about pouring the yellow "lemonade" section first, it sounds like that could also fix your floating ice issue. As the fimo slices and silicon would sit/float atop the yellow section and then be cured within the first pour. Then just pour the clear part atop that. Either way, these dice look wonderful, always a pleasure to see your videos~ Edit: Oops! Just saw some others had the same idea, haha such is the way of the internet

The other benefit of pouring the "lemonade" part first (aside from the correct surface tension direction) is that the inclusions can float and break the surface of the lemonade as real ice and lemons do, but also maybe be partially submerged and therefore stuck down without glue at all. You could maybe consider curing a drop of the resin first on top of the inclusions without putting them in the dice, to weigh them down into the resin within the dice later. LOVE your stuff, and some day when I have a living space that is large enough to section part off for projects and ventilate properly I want to follow some of your experiments!

when you pressure cast your dice in multiple parts like this design do you ever get a seem line with your dice? and if so does sanding fix that?
@Rybonator
@Rybonator 2 жыл бұрын
Yes I do get that - The main way to stop that is to cast it while the first layer is still in a jelly like consistency (maybe an hour after the mixing stage is done). This will help some of the new resin blend with the old :) But it's a tricky dance not to reintroduce bubbles

You could pour a thin middle layer of resin to hold the silicone in. It's okay if it floats, because the set resin will hold it down anyway, and you'll still have more resin to cover it with in the final layer

Man you could do a whole cocktail dice series, now that you've found a good fake ice technique! I don't drink, but there are some incredible looking cocktails out there that would look pretty awesome in dice form XD Might be a little tedious to make, though.

Fun fact: in movies they use clear silicone to make fake ice. It makes no sound and doesn't melt

Oooohh my goodness, these look so cool!!! I just adore lemon-themed anything 😄 I'd love to see your take on the strawberry lemonade dice as well, if you're thinking about making them! I also think these ones would have looked super cute if they'd been inked in pink (any shade, from pastel to a deep fuchsia); yellow and pink is just such a lovely color combo--but maybe that's just the strawberry-lemonade-lover in me talking again 😆

Woooo, they look suuuuper cool!!!! (Haha, a cool lemonade). I was playing Divinity original sin, which I think might be based on DnD, and as always using a wizard. But they are like, super focused on water/ice skills!! So, I'm just imagining this fake ice to make frost wizards dice, that could be awesome! I really enjoy your work, keep it up!! 💜💜

These came out great! I would think that you could use a bit of UV resin rather than the super glue to hold the inclusions down.

you could use the silicone's preference to float to accomplish their placement without glue or any kind of adhesive. just add them on top of the first layer of resin before you put them in the pressure pot.

I have a suggestion for the holding of the foam bits and silicone. If you want to do it the method that you did in the video you could simply use UV resin to hold it down you could even color it the way you would color the lemonade portion. Another option is to do the reverse do the lemonade first and simply drop the bits in when the resin is slightly cured and solid enough to hold the bits from falling completely through but it sinking into the yellow resin might make it look more realistic and warp it like the clear resin did

These are so cool!!!! Not only a really fun idea but it’s a technique that doesn’t seem too intimidating to me which is tempting me to try it!!! I’m wondering for the holidays if hot chocolate dice could be possible 🤔 Also, more lore for the skill share universe!!!!!! We’ll have to tune in next time for more!!!

The lemons are made of polymer clay. It’s a really cool process where you wrap and rewrap the colored clay shapes until they look like a lemon slice. These start out about the size of a quarter then are rolled down and cut into slices that can be placed into dice. Foam would have had a much different reaction in the pressure pot. Just FYI, from one artist to another.😉

Those fruit slice thingies are made of polymer clay, an oven bake clay. They are made the same way old fashioned candy is where you roll a log with patterns since slice after bake.

I think your best bet for securing the silicone pieces would be a thin layer of resin. Just enough to coat everything, but not enough to let it float. The downside of course is that it adds and extra day to the process while waiting for it to cure.
