Making Fake Rocks - Rebar, Lath, Concrete and Paint

Theming artist, Kym Cochran makes faux rocks, faux trees and pretty much anything from the natural world. Here you can see her make the rocks for "1925": a 4 four-piece sculpture that commemorates the 1925 Santa Barbara earthquake.
Grants for the project were given by Santa Barbara Beautiful and The Santa Barbara County Office of Arts and Culture.

Am I the only person absolutely obsessed by artificial rocks? I have no clue why but there always given me a pleasant feeling. Maybe they remind me of theme parks and pool areas.

Hi David. I just came across this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eXq6hHeubtJ2aNU It gives a few technical details... i.e. using a 1 to 1 ratio of sand to cement to lay up the bulk, tools used to texture, and the use of "stucco fog coat" (just googled it) for coloring, etc.

The paint is actually just regular, flat house paint thinned to go through a chapin sprayer.

What paints are suitable on concrete for longevity and outdoors.

Hello, I use Rosco theatrical paints and acrylic based paints. The Roscos can be watered down to give great ageing effects. Dont paint the concrete until at least three days after concrete has set otherwise the paint will not penetrate far. If you are building concrete theming outdoors where theres lots of footfall and contact with the public you can seal the lot afterwards with a matt finish clear concrete sealer. If you want to look at the work I do go to www.creatorious.smugmug.com I carve and paint slightly differently to the artist in the video. Most theming artists have there own slightly different takes on carving stone. But the best advice I can give you when rockworking is dont think too much about it..and switch hands and posture regularly so you dont get any patterns of uniformity like all your cracks in the same direction or angle. Most of all have fun... Cheers

Try to pay attention…The Rock's did not fall apart. They are different examples of similar rock statues. If you are trying to learn how to make things by watching videos, it's very important to pay attention. The cigarettes a nice touch.

I didn’t love the final result bc it loooked fake time me. Kinda janky. I don’t think enough time was put into the sculpting. But what’s crazy to me is that it fell apart. That’s likely bc it wasn’t really done well. It wasn’t sculpted and evened out enough first I’m thinking. Nice attempt though.
