I didn't think I would either but I am doing a lot of clearing of noxious brush near my boundary and some of those piles house bumble bee nests that I do not want to destroy. I have been thinking about different "covers" I could make for the nesting areas I leave there and with every idea I come up with, I know people (passers by) will interfere with them, either deliberate destruction or theft. This fake rock idea I think just may be the answer. Bumble bee nests are not big like hives, they are quite little, and rocks just half the size he made in the vid will be sufficient. The only extra care I have to take is the cavity should be unobstructed and big enough to just drop over the existing litter mound the bees home is in, even allow for some nest expansion if they feel truely comfortable in there, and that there is an entry/exit tunnel made from a short piece of hose built into the rock at the base, and sloping downwards so rain can not enter the nest. After so long trying to come up with a safe solution to saving the bees, I'm pretty sure this will work.

Looks great. And be sure to park your vehicle far enough away that you dont damage the paint. I harmed one car doing touch up paint on another nearby. It took me a minute or two to figure out where 100 tiny polka dots came from.

Back in the day 1970’s when people wanted a “rock shelf” to hide the pool pump. We would build a frame to hold and access the pool pump. We then used whatever was about to make a base for the rock. Cover it with bird wire then, make a concrete mix adding various sized polystyrene pellets in the concrete. Sculpt the rock shape and powdering the surface with a coloured oxide. Let it cure for 7 days . Come back and pour petrol over the rock. All the exposed polystyrene would dissolve and there you are ….. a rock!

You could also use rock salt pressed into the outside of the rock after you finish sculpting it. Then you can wash it with water; a LOT safer than using petrol!!

I had a pile of broken concrete, so instead of dumping it, i stacked it in a bolder shape. Used a similar technique to coat it a few times but I used off white cement with the sand.

Yes another route to the same end. I have a Gentefied 12 different methods for creating rock the one you utilized a call, solid fill or usually I take a little bit of rubble a little bit of mud, a little bit of rubble and layer it and then coded at the end. Thanks for Sharon.

It's basically a tech stone, Styrofoam and concrete, design and stain to make it appear like a real granite field stone, a 600 lb. Rock that you can put on your shoulder and walk down the street with it.

I was taught how to make textures using silicone forms made off of natural rocks as transfer templets we could press into the wet formed rocks we were contracted to make. When done they looked so realistic that you would never think they were hand made. My teacher was the son of the man that did Disney's Matterhorn in Anaheim CA.

What a great idea! I live in the first house on a cul-de-sac, and the edge of our driveway is constantly driven over by big trucks which caused that corner to cave in. We recently have had the driveway repaved and have been looking at large rocks to put next to the corner to keep vehicles from driving over the edge. Rocks can cost a few hundred dollars, so your idea will be perfect for what we need. Thanks for sharing.

So I live in New Hampshire, and there used to be a natural face on a mountain called "The Old Man on the Mountain." It unfortunately collapsed back in 2003. Over the years, I have figured out that there are 12 methods to creating any shape of rock… although cardboard is free, sometimes are limitations with it, but depending on the size, it’s probably what I would lean towards

No… the mud was already dried when I chiseled it and there was no more smoothing it out but that’s the characteristic you want is a chisel broken look to emulate a fracturing…

after the second seal coat will it hold paint ? i used to make rocks occaisionaly for sets for plays,that I built scenery for. they werent weather proof, being on a stage, but alot had stairs or ramps built into them, and were fun to texture and paint but it was all styrofoam, chicken wire, latex, with thickeners, and fabric, didnt work with all of the cement products ...

Yes, after the second seal coat, it will hold paint, but we also seal it again, with a clear acrylic sealer the locks in the paint and stops the rock from becoming stand any further from foreign elements. Thanks for watching.

Thank you for your feedback. I appreciate you watching my video. There’s a lot of different mixes that we use. I believe that in this video it was just a regular mortar that I got from the hardware store and again we use that same mixes make a texture as well.

A trick I used on a cave I made that gave a really nice natural texture, was when it was about 1/2 to 3/4 cured, I brushed it vigorously with a wet chip brush. That smoothed out the finish like weathering but kept the lumpy.

We make tons of these type rock and haven’t had a problem with unwanted guest. We always bury the rock about two inches below grade.

Looks great from the outside. Looks like a rock and a nice addition to the lawn area or the front of a property. However, shouldn't the bottom be sealed as well? Because eventually, water and humidity will get there and rot the cardboard which is basically paper. With all the work done up top, the bottom sealing should be easier so that its sealed from all sides and perhaps, last much longer.

Been making rocks for 48 years now like this and we usually take the cardboard out but even if we didn’t, it serves no more purpose and it could rot fall out do whatever it wants. It’s not gonna hurt the rock. . Many people always have a lot to say about furthering the process but I would’ve done that if it was required, An old boy once told me “They only pay to do it once” I took that to heart and never forget it.

How much weight can one of these faux rocks support? Reason I'm asking....I'd like to make a faux rock base for a coffee table that will have a thick and pretty heavy wood slab top. The price of faux rock over real rock is usually less expensive when you figure out all of the logistics of using real rock compared to faux rock. Knowing Rock the size that I made in this video, there’s not too much heavy logistics and using real rock what is the rocks get bigger that’s where you start saving money.

can this type of mortar be used to make rocks to go around a fire pit? The rocks would not be in direct contact with the fire but still exposed to the heat

No mortars and concrete generally cannot be used in fireplaces. They will pop and crack. We do make a mixture for building in fireplaces and more specifically I’ve been involved in refractory and liner type of building for all kinds of fire applications. I typically tell my students to locate a brick manufacture because they will sell you their brick mix in a bag and you can build your rocks with that and fire brick Mixture can take the heat. Curious what kind of hydro seal you’re using? And what kind of bonding agent?

The Hydro seal that I use personally is one that I developed, which is proprietary to my company, but there are a lot of manufactures of hydro sealers on the market, so it’s not hard to locate. The bonding agent and the admixtures that we put in cement or one in the same thing. It’s an acrylic resin carried in water.

love your work man, - hey, just a quick thought, to get different hues and colors, you can mix in random cement coloring agent so they look more unique. This technique is great, its how the ancient Mayans got all their stone pyramids to perfectly fit together .... true story

I utilize penetrating stains, and it cost very little to stain this way and it lasts and it doesn’t peel. Obviously we see all over the top of that to lock it in to give it UV protection. Marc, i’m not sure if I understand your question… if I make something out of cardboard, I screw it together with the drywall screws that hold it together until we mud it… I’ve never left a creation that I made out of cardboard outside for any length of time because it might get rained on and ruined as I live here in the north west. I mean, after its covered w/ the concrete mudding, and the painting and texturing... you remove the cardboard base when it goes outside? I'm assuming theses faux rocks live outside when you're done?@@fauxrock

There’s no need to remove the cardboard from a rock in some cases when we make it 360° item it’s impossible to take it out. In the past when we were making these types of rocks, we would take the cardboard out because it was more professional, but there was no other motivation… You can leave a Cardboard inside with no ill effect. Once the structures built around the cardboard is no more use. No more need nothing more comes from it.

You can cut your work in half if you splatter the second coat PARtially, eliminate the third coat and most of the sanding. It will weigh less as well.

i have seen rock fountains where a hole was drilled to pipe water thru. this certainly would be much lighter. i also watched a YT where water fountains for birds were made using a deflated rubber playground ball. i have so many ideas in my head now!

hi, thanks i'm just wondering how necessary the last part is, the sealant? isn't concrete waterproof as it is (after drying) i dont have much $ but am trying to help a stray cat by creating a fake rock shelter for her (insulated inside) also: how important is the mesh? can i just put concrete on the box (as u did the first layer)? i don't plan on doing do many layers & making it less heavy thanks again

You don’t have to get fancy with it you could make a rock without the mesh and you don’t have to seal it. I do these things to give it better longevity but they’re not absolutely necessary. thanks for watching my video

I Love your videos. Just discovered this a week a go. Watching all the vids trying to learn techniques & materials. Sorry I can't afford DVD course. I'm sure its well worth it. You mention adding glue I think with mortar mix & also you spray something on cardboard to water proof before add layers of mortar mix. I would greatly appreciate what those 2 items are. The glue that I put on the cardboard to waterproof it and the glue that I add into Cement are both one in the same product. I utilize 100% water-based, acrylic glue. you should be able to find it in any Masonary building supply store unlike Lowe’s or Home Depot
