You didn't need to drill a larger section of the hole for the lag bolt. The squared inside corners will dig into the wood and lock the bolt preventing it from turning when you tighten the nut.

I think your '76 is '73 or earlier. Gas fill was moved from behind the seat in 73 or 74.
