I grew up in a very poor family but we had wonderful Christmases, not rich in gifts but fun. My mom had a cute little bank and started saving Jan 26th for the next Christmas. A quarter here and a dime saved there all went into piggy, She sewed, crocheted, baked and made Christmas wonderful, not because of great presents but great love.

Christmas decor wasn't in the budget for us this year either, but we've gone too may years without Christmas stockings...so I've spent the last few days while sick making quilted patchwork stockings from odds and ends of red and green fabric I had stashed away from past sewing projects. They need another few hours of work to assemble the insides and outsides with batting but they're looking so cute! So much better than anything I could have bought and now we'll have these handmade stockings for years to come. Plus free entertainment haha. Merry Christmas to your family :)

My entire adult life, I have been a 'jack-of-all-trades' but it wasn't by choice. I learned to do a variety of things because I couldn't afford to spend money. Now as a retired, old person, I am grateful for all the skills I've learned. I never had much money, but I was rich in so many ways. Now, I look at my grown children and grandchildren, and realize how wonderful my life has been.

For years I have shopped the local thrift stores for holiday decorations. It never fails to be a rewarding experience. Making sugar cookies with the children is one of our favorite traditions, and the ingredients are almost always on hand. Putting out the homemade decorations from the kids each year makes the warmth extra special. Seeing the decorations my daughter made as a child next to the decorations her children have just made creates such a lovely feeling! Many blessings, and Merry Christmas!

For anyone living in the city that doesn’t have access to cutting pine trees in the woods, I’ve been able to gather lots of branches from Christmas tree cutting lots at places like Home Depot and Lowes. These are the branches that are cut off the trees, while they are being trimmed, but they make great garlands and tucking on the shelves for that fresh pine scent. When I asked about them, I got them for free.

Fifty five years ago I put up my first Christmas tree. Found a box of wooden Christmas ornaments that you had to paint yourself. What an amazing tree it was. Yes, times are hard but taking your children on a nature walk will fill your tree with Gods creations. Merry Christmas 🎄 and God Bless.m

I use the same decorations year after year. I generally only get something new if someone gifts it to me. Most of my decorations are actually gifts given to me by friends and family. I remember my mom letting me choose a few favorite Christmas tree ornaments from her collection when it came time for me to move out on my own. This year I did need to buy some new lights for the tree as the old ones gave out after roughly twenty years.

Life can come at you hard at times. Rejoyce anyway. Unto us a Savior is born, good tiding to all. Hard to watch a parent slowly slip away and you having been sick makes it more aggravating. I know one year I had a really hard year, all the way around, seemed like every month it was something major. Deaths, sickness, all of it. The scripture that I hung on to be still and know that I am God. I mourned, and was depressed some days, even thought maybe I would not survive another thing, and I could barely pray. I wonder why me, God, and everywhere I went I saw that Bible verse, or someone said it to me. So, I just lived each day with being still and knowing God is and I got through it. All things come to pass, and a season for all things. So, hang in there do the best you can, and you shall see the other side again. Life is not without grief or needs and sorrow. Just through Christ we have our hope and his peace through it all. Prayers for you and your mom. God bless you for dementia is so very difficult. Enjoy the moments and love her through the ones not so great, love is greatest of all. Know Christ walks beside you and carries you too. Peace!

I have 2 wild grapevine and curly willow and I will start making more wreath formers for friends and families too cut their prices in half. And making more crocheted and knitted sets and stuffed animals too donate too churches and hospitals. Cause most yarns have been gifted too me for making and sharing. I made a facemask hat that could be folded up for a normal hat. And when the people around him seen it asked for one too. Because it has finally gotten down below -5 now. Mrs. Q here...One of the best Christmases we've ever had was when we had virtually zero money for gifts for our 4 kids. The kids and I brainstormed ideas, found things around the house to repurpose, purchased a few things at a local thrift store, used coupons, and found things on sale for the rest. Our kids were forced to look at each other on a deeper level to come up with something the others would like. I think we spent less than $20 total for 5 gifts (one for each kid and one for their dad). They all still have their gifts years later and still talk about that year with fondness. I highly recommend it to everyone. Blessings to you and your family! Merry Christmas! 🎄

Go on a nature walk and collect pinecones, acorns, seeds, nuts, feathers, etc. to decorate a wreath, garland, or tree. You can make decorations, or ornaments, out of applesauce, flour, and cinnamon. Look up a recipe online. You cut shapes out with cookie cutters, and bake them in the oven. Decorated sugar cookies can be decor, too. You can make paper snowflakes, and you can also craft decorations with old Christmas cards. A fun thing to do is to make play dough. You can google a recipe, and color it with food coloring. You can always melt down a bunch of old (nearly used up) candles, and make a big new candle or two. Baking gingerbread houses is fun, and you could just use graham crackers and icing to make little houses. There are many things you can do with little or no money!

Not only are we teaching our son that you don’t have to spend huge amounts for things to be special. Buy some apples and oranges and dry them out, string popcorn and berries or make salt and flour ornaments and get your children to help. It’s a great way to get them involved, they’ll treasure your time with them whilst having fun and making memories. Children won’t remember the shiny new things they received but they’ll remember the fun of making things and if taken care of, those ornaments will last for years but the memories will last forever. xxx

One year my brother and I went to the Christmas tree selling lot a block away one evening and the man gave us a nice Charlie Brown tree. I remember the joy we felt dragging that tree down the block and we were so proud that it was good enough to be our tree that year. We were very young, about 4 and 6 years old. I am 70 years old and my parents fortunes improved a lot over the years and mine even more so.

Just a hint for next year's greens...a paddle of craft wire makes doing your own greens SO much easier and my paddles last forever...I tried using twine and it's so difficult to tighten sufficiently...I've made all my greens for years...good for the pocketbook but even better for your spirit!

Everyone watching this video should listen to the song Christmas every day by unspoken. It really expresses how everyone should be feeling ALL the time. Merry Christmas everyone!

Such a sweet video❤ I am going out back to my enchanted forest to get some fresh greenery today to Christmas up my little house. My sister and her husband are coming on Tuesday for a pre Christmas visit for a couple of days. I have no money for a huge feast like turkey etc, but I plan on doing baking tomorrow and we will have baked pasta, squash soup and salad and Greek potatoes etc for the two days. And of course sourdough bread. I hope to see you soon before Christmas. 🥰

Finding peace and contentment in the midst of hard times. These past three years have been the hardest for me health wise but my relationship with Jesus has flourished. This I know…I wouldn’t change places with anyone even if I could. Again, it’s about finding that peace and contentment in the midst of your circumstances. You are far richer than many for you are wise in the things that matter. Merry Christmas to you and yours dear Laramie. ❤️

There are so many fun ornaments to make with children. I'm 64 and remember as a small child with my siblings and parents spending many afternoons crafting with all the "found" goodies, glue, paint and various scraps. The best memories of childhood come out of feeling loved and safe in a big sometimes scary world and it looks like you're doing a fine job!🕊

By the way, I still have many of the ornaments! Even the ones attacked by our kitty!

I just want to say that I almost never comment on KZbin or anything else, but it has really been impressed on my heart to say something to you, not just about this post, but about all of your posts. I want to say “yes, yes, yes!” To how you are trying to live your life and rear your children. I always dreamed of being dept free, and we did finally accomplish this, although we were older than you when we were able to do it. I know now that it was mainly because I wanted to stay near our families, which was in an area with high cost housing. I so admire you guys for having the courage to step out and go to an area that was more . In any case it sounds like you are doing everything you can to live within your means, yet enjoy spending time with each other, while having tasty, nutritious meals. So glad to see younger people doing this. I know you are teaching these values to your children also. So many times today, it seems people are so rushed, and so busy trying to earn more money to keep up the lifestyle they think they have to live, they loose site of what is really important. If you know how to cook, and I mean really know how to cook like you do, you can save so much money. You can even involve your children in the cooking, too, as they are able, and they like it! Also with making your own decorations and other things also. Home keeping skills are much undervalued today. And you can spend more quality time with your family with your family if you can find ways to spend, and therefore need, less money. Teach your kids everything you can, from cooking to housekeeping to home carpentry and repair skills. And keep doing it yourself. It works, I know, I am a lot older than you. But even today, it works, and it may be even more important in today’s world than ever. Kudos to you and your family! You go girl! (The name on the account is my husband’s, I am Susan) Find .

Use a stick as the base of your garland and tie bunches of the cuttings along it. It is easier to hang too, less floppy. 🎄
