I'm in the minority and I do like the rusted look on a set of irons. Great video!

Don't mind my wedges rusting but it would bother me to do that to my irons. Maybe to the face groove area but not the whole iron.

Hey AJ! I know this is an older video and hopefully you still get notified about it. Have you ever tried the rust bluing process? Its a series of applications of the mixture of water, hydrogen peroxide, and salt to create the rust layer, and then boiling the piece in distilled water. The reaction should turn the raw steel black and ultimately prevent from rusting. If you repeat the process 4-5 times, youre left with a nice black finish. Its an old school process used for plackening tools, irearms, etc. Im thinking of trying this but want to see if someone out there has done it. Thanks!

I haven't tried it. Let us know how it works.

Yeah. Have you done this yet?
@AZstu3244 ай бұрын
@@featherfoot614 I actually ended up doing it. Results are posted on my golf spy under the Toura Golf test thread. It turned out pretty awesome!

Plain H2O2 would work better, as the vinegar is a reducing agent, which will REMOVE rust. I'm not sure the salt will contribute either. We simply want oxidation in this instance. Love the channel, by the way!
@asdfjkl981 Жыл бұрын
I think the vinegar is just ther to lower the ph value. i would prefer hydrochloric acid. and the salt could be some kind of chloride ion donator, chloride is quite effective on steel. h2o2 is not that effective on its own especially the 3% stuff they use in the original recipe that everyone copies although it outweighs the vinegar easily.

I would like to see this done with gun blue solvent. I'm curious how it would come out.

It looks amazing. Essentially black. But you can use copper browning solution and it works well.

I've used a mixture of French's Mustard and plain tap water to add a dark patina to my carbon steel chef's knives. This serves to offset the inevitable staining the steel acquires with use. I don't think this would add any friction to the club face but I was wondering if this might be a good alternative to the rust method you show here.

I've never head this before. Might need to try it.

Be interesting to see what it would look like if you masked the face, or just rusted the face and left the rest of the head clean.
@EFGMC Жыл бұрын
It would look like those TM wedges they put out a year or so ago I would guess. I thought about doing a tape job with some sort of pattern but didn't get around to it. Wonder if you run into any USGA conforming issues if you start doing that on the face.
@chuckpalmer284 Жыл бұрын
It is certainly a personal preference, but I do not want my clubs to look 40 years old. Why not just use old rusty clubs it would be much cheaper. But it is an interesting video.
@jeffnahass8373 Жыл бұрын
The faces usually do not have that brushed finish. Can you just rust out the faces?
@EFGMC Жыл бұрын
It's a different look but still covered ie not raw. You would still need to remove that finish to get down to the raw metal.

Why C0 and D2 swing weights feel no big difference to me? Instead, I'm more sensitive to the total weight. I cut all my clubs 2'' short by myself, so swing weight should go from D2 to C0, if I'm not wrong. However, now I feel I can swing more freely, no issue at all, and even gain little bit more speed (maybe due to the better ball stricking not the club length)... My question is, do I need to put some weight on the club heads to make the swing weight right (D2 e.g.)? BTW, my transition is pretty fast I feel, and I'm 5'7'', 135lb, super strong grip, john daly style backswing, ~113mph driver club head speed now, got some my swing videos on my channel, if you are interesting.

Get some lead tape and experiment with adding weight to the heads. Might help, might not, but only way to know is trial and error.

My irons are completlely raw with no paint fill, I want to add color into the numbers and letters on the iron, should I do that before or after intentionally rusting the iron with this solution?
@EFGMC5 ай бұрын
You can do it after, just need to clean out the rust from where the paint will go to get a good surface.
@Pagemarks Жыл бұрын
How easily is that surface rust removed just by rubbing a towel over it?
@EFGMC Жыл бұрын
You can get some of it off with a towel. Probably require something more in depth to get it back to original state though.

Will this process work for a chrome finished wedge?
@EFGMC Жыл бұрын
No, the chrome is meant to prevent oxidizing so you need to strip the chrome before this will work. Otherwise it will take I don't know how long to get the process going.
@tylerpeterson46 Жыл бұрын
When I do this it normally rubs off right after ? Is there a way to make it stick better ?
@EFGMC Жыл бұрын
That just requires more time for the rust to really penetrate the metal vs just being on the very surface like here.

What about removing the black off my wedge. TaylorMade milled grind 2. Has a rusty face but I want to remove the black finish too.
@EFGMC Жыл бұрын
That should be pretty simple with some sand blasting, won't take much if you have the tools or know a machine shop that has them.
@biggregg5 Жыл бұрын
I'm watching because I like your channel, but a rusty club just isn't for me unless somehow it improves function. Everything I've seen, even though they claim it improves spin, it doesn't.
@EFGMC Жыл бұрын
No argument here on spin. No difference, just like the look and it's totally personal preference.
@billmalec Жыл бұрын
If anything it decreases spin because the surface has loose stuff(rust) on it.
