Hey rick! I’m a mechanical engineering major and was also curious how high the ball went so I did some math. With the info you gave (85 mph club head speed, 70 degrees loft (ish), 23 total yards, and about 3 seconds of flight time) I found that the ball went about 75 feet in the air. This isn’t exact cause of the rough perimeters given. But it gives you some idea at least!
@jubuttib
@jubuttib 3 жыл бұрын
Would be interesting to hear what the launch angle actually was. Looking at TXG's recent test of the Kirkland Signature vs. SM8 wedges, with a 56° wedge the launch angle was around 30-32°, and with a 60° wedge it was around 31-34°, depending on the shot. That's with wedges that really grip the ball and give you high spin, so if this was a lower spin wedge (as Rick mentioned it might be) then it could launch higher, but still I'd be surprised if it was anything like 70° degrees.

As a total distance travelled through the air with the curve, or at the apex height?
@mitchdavies8415
@mitchdavies8415 3 жыл бұрын
@Reavx the ball carried 23 yards, or 69 feet, and considering it’s a 70 degree club, I highly doubt Brian means the total length of the curve was 75 feet…

I have had a 70 degree wedge for 3-4 years now and it is an awesome club in certain situations. The ball really gets up in the air quickly and can stop almost on dime when it lands on the green. Just have to make sure I dont get too much under the ball, cause I have taken some pretty good swings in thick grass with the wedge and i can get completely under the ball and the ball stays almost right where it originally was. You do need to practice some with a 70 degree wedge to get the feel of how far the ball will travel.

Just a question is there no legal limit to the loft of a club in the rules of golf
@dathyr1
@dathyr1 2 жыл бұрын
@@michaelmathieson1114 Good question. I havent heard about any, I assume if the club meets all the other standard specs of club making, it is probably legal. All you have to do is open or close the face on any club and you change the loft angle. So with my 70 degree wedge, i can even increase the loft on that club to maybe even a 75-80 degree wedge. My 70 degree wedge is great for short distances and dropping the golf ball next to the pin with not much green to work with.

I've never been big into golf, but my late father was quite the enthusiast. Contrary to what some say about lofting golf balls, I recall times when my father practiced his loft (flop) shots. He'd instruct me to stand still and would tell me, "Stay put and try to catch the golf ball after I hit it." It was astonishing how many of those balls were within catching range, and he never once risked hitting me.

Yesterday I holed in a 60 yard chip on a long par 4 for my first ever birdie with my 56 degree sand wedge. What's funny is I didn't even hit it well, it was kind of a line shot (but with some loft). It bounced on the green and rolled a little bit towards the flag and it went IN. For a guy who's only a few years into this game and shoots 105-110 on a regular day, it was sure as hell a moment of a lifetime.

The bunker shot is basically what Dustin Johnson said about the 64* wedge. There's a video of the TM Pro's in a bunker hitting the new Hi-Toe wedges. DJ grabbed a 64* and was amazed at how easy bunker shots became. He kept saying over and over how all he has to do is aim square and leave the club face square and swing and the ball just pops out.

Rick T that’s definitely the danger with these kinds of things. You’re swinging so hard, if you thin it, it’s gone.

Everyone should have/experience a 64. Have hit some amazing shots with it but you also have to accept there will be some flops.

I have a 62 & a 65 degree. Mostly for rough around the green but occasionally for a bunker if I'm close to a lip.

Great vid. Flop shots are great fun. My son and I hit a lot of flopped catches to each other. I did once almost take his head off with a thinned shot - something he's never forgotten! Not used very often TBH but very handy to have every now and then. Cheers from Sydney - Dave

Rick, they the Callway Supershot and Supersoft golf balls. You will love them. The feel of the balls off the club are great and the distance you get are phenomenal as well as the feel of the ball off the putter makes it one of the best balls to try.

The second time I caught you looking at the ball and watching it go over your head and onto the green. Shut the front door thanks for doing that, that was awesome.

My bag make up is Dr, 5w, 4h, 5-PW, 50, 54, 58 & 64. The 64 is in there because I had an extra slot and need exactly the help that this type club gives. I don’t feel any major gaps at the top end, if I’m more than 215 - 220 out for my approach, and it’s not August, then I know it’s two shots. If I’m in a nasty greenside bunker or need to get over some horror show, I’m carrying the tool to do it. Well done on the 2m!!

Mine arrived this week and WOW, I can flop it up from near the green, and bunkers don't give me the yikes anymore! What a joy to swing and hit; it certainly earned a place in my bag.

I bought one, and I LOVE it! There's nothing better out of the sand. It also is very helpful when you are playing on a very hilly course.

If you already have a 60 degree lob wedge in your bag, is a 70 degree really needed if you can "flop" the ball with the 60 wedge? Thanks
