I hope they tie in all of this WWII history stuff into parts 2-5....otherwise I'm really not sure why we're getting this huge history lesson when most of us came here to watch the making of Gone With The Wind!

The public DEMANDED Gable as "Rhett Butler" (even though Margaret Mitchell originally envisioned Basil Rathbone as "Rhett"!)...and David O. Selznick paid a heavy price to "borrow him" from his father-in-law, Louis B. Mayer; MGM owned the film by 1944.

I learned when watching "That's Entertainment! Part II" (I believe), that 1939 was a REMARKABLE year for movies...so many legendary films came out of that year like GWTW, of course, "The Wizard of Oz", "Wuthering Heights", "Gunga Din", etc. I don't know what it was about that year but when it came to cinema, it was a truly epic point in time!

GWTW was complete hocus pocus bullshit. Anyone who has any real knowledge of the story of the rise and fall of the Confederacy recognizes GWTW as being nothing but wistful, revisionist tripe, surpassed in that denotation only by "Birth of a Nation." [i.e. at least GWTW did not somehow overtly cast the Ku Klux Klan as the protagonist hero of its storyline...not exactly.]

The show Our World would focus on a time period each week. They would sometimes focus on one story, but always they would the other things that happened, giving historical context. So, this is mostly about GWTW, with other stories sprinkled throughout.

I have studied World War II extensively. I thought this post was about the film Gone With The Wind, which was made irrespective to the war. The film preparation substantially preceded September of 1939. The correlation of the two is entirely coincidental!
@2degucitas
@2degucitas 7 жыл бұрын
Studying it and living through it are two different things. According to my parents they did coincide. Making such an expensive film during war when everyone had rationing was seen as wasteful. But the country needed this film to inspire and escape.

Well, I know about "your country" and I say you're wrong. My great grandparents were German Jews who were betrayed by their longtime neighbors. I lived in Germany as a child and visited later. The German citizens that I know did not and do not accept much responsibility. I've heard a lot of "we didn't know it was happening" or "the government didn't tell us" or "It's in the past, don't talk about that," & whatever America's alleged "war crimes" were, they can't even compare to the holocaust.

Damn, so many Germans are still so overly defensive & oversensitive about what their parents/grandparents' generation did. It was disgusting. Period. Trying to shift the blame onto others, including the Americans, won't make what they did any less disgusting. Just own it already and stop making excuses!

No, the US wanted to help but could not find a good enough excuse to have the US public on side, pearl harbor gave the US that excuse. Now, can you read a history book? because you can find some amazing facts in there. My comment was over two years ago, in that time my mind has changed and I have become less unreasonable because I have educated myself to other cultures by using the internet to learn. I like Germany now and the German people.

One can certainly understand why "Our World" only lasted on season, beginning with its unappealing, uncharismatic, boring hosts to this very uneven piece with 3-4 minutes of totally unrelated footage of the Nazi invasion of Poland which has absolutely NOTHING to do with the making of Gone with the Wind. The time could've been put to much better use with more history about GWTW.

You know absolutely nothing about what I know. You wrote: "And the US only helped because of Pearl Harbour. They didn't care when the Nazis killed millions - yes, they DID know about this." LOL That's your idea of "accepting responsibility and admitting guilt"? Further, the fact that you now lash out by making the asinine claim that: "America has NEVER owned ANY of its manifold war crimes over the decades" ...only proves my point. You felt the need to try to shift guilt yet again! Sad.
