Our deputy inspector shows us how a masonry grout sample is made so it can be tested for compression.
these tests are generally made when the grout strength will be above the normal standards. always refer to your structural drawings to see if you need to have these types of testing done in your walls.

Having twelve 12" blocks is impractical for any inspector who does multiple job site vists in a day. I've been doing inspections for 16 years now and I've only been required to do this particular test method on one job. We always use the cardboard boxes.

Yes sir..cardboatd grout boxes. I now & then run into jobsites with prehistoric specs that actually require making pinwheel grout samples.

@@altaf1977 i had to do it on a job where the only block on site was split-faced (with one rough side)...which made it more difficult to make the samples. The were only 4" blocks too and would blow out if i didnt set it up just right. It required 10 blocks for just 3 samples.

This does not conform to any sort of ASTM standard. Molds should be metal and the list goes on and on.

+stynga You might be thinking about cubes. Prisms for grout can be made in cmu blocks or cardboard sample boxes. They mimic the absorption of the water from the grout. If you use metal molds, it would not be representative of the placed grout in cmu block walls.
