The samples should actually turn out closer to 3.5" x 7". A square 3/4" wood or plastic spacer is inserted in the bottom of the cavity before filling it with grout. Don't forget to use paper or cardboard on all 4 sides or you will be left with a hung chunck of monolithic concrete that you can't separate and can't use.

CMU are actually 7 and 5/8 inches high

Doesn’t account for the 3/8 of mortar, which would give you 8”.

If you don't have a tape, a cmu size is twice the length of your pecke

We use the cardboard grout boxes. Much easier and approved by ASTM.
