Here's a neat trick to get the neck straight lines PERFECTLY straight without having to fiddle on the sanders: Take something that is known to be straight (usually i take a piece of scrap mdf and run it on my table saw) , then stick some rough sandpaper on one of its faces ... Then you can take this straight edge and place it on the neck template .. line it up with the mark (you can use a marking knife to make sure it is bang on the line) and then you can run the whole thing on the router table with a template bit ... The straight edge wont move as the sandpaper grips really well so you can easily make the tapers in seconds without any fussing with a sanding beam

I've also got to say, I love that body design! I got a cheap body that I'm going to play/practice with, and I think I'm going to try to incorporate a little of the design aesthetic of this body into it. The slightly flattened horn and shoulder and the scoop out of the bottom are really jiving with me.

So I am 2:30 in and I am already glad I watched this video! Awesome tip on the alignment marks with the paper! Fascinating! I am glad to see that with my templates I am at least on the right track
@NeoRichardBlake2 жыл бұрын
Making the paper in your model space is actually kind of genius. Aligning 1:1 prints can be such a pain, but using those alignment points and just plotting straight from model space, rather than even fussing with paper space was a great idea.
@HearGear Жыл бұрын
I always print my guitar paper templates with my 48" paper roll inkjet printer, i bought it cheap from a company that used it for printing big maps and such. So then i do not have to align anything .. :D

@@HearGear that's the ideal. 😋 We don't all have space for large format printer though. That's pretty awesome that you got a sweet deal you could take advantage of like that though. 👍

Great video man. I was trying to make a template with plywood, but is not as easy to sand as MDF. I was having problems with the straight parts of neck, but resolved it by using a router and a ruler as a guide. Love your content, keep rocking!
@UnquendorGuitars4 жыл бұрын
Hi Leonel, Thanks man! I've been thinking about making plywood templates as they are more sturdy. But like you said it is harder to work with. Maybe start with a 6mm MDF and then make a plywood copy. The ruler and router method is a very nice solution indeed. Thanks for the tip.

hey man, i think templates are the most fun of makin your own guitar,,i mean really,, who in their rite mind would want to just pick up a luthier habbit, necks are a pain in the ass just setting up already built guitars,, the whole reason i started trying to make my own, originally, was because i couldn't afford to have 50 different guitars i fell in liove with,,, but now that i've gotten into it , i really can't afford them,,, it cost more to build one from scratch,, but i do love it, but especially body templates
@UnquendorGuitars4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jake, Thanks for your comment. Making templates, although very time consuming, is very enjoyable indeed. And you are correct in saying that building a guitar from scratch is probably more expensive than most guitars hanging in the shops.

Nice, you choose for a 4-2 tuner setup
@UnquendorGuitars4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ton, Yes this model is going to have a 4x2 tuner layout. This way I can have straight string pull to all tuners and still keep a relative small headstock. And I think it's going to look amazing on this guitar.

Thanks for your video, very informative, I’m a novice with software, is there any easy to use software for the beginner to understand 🙂
@UnquendorGuitars6 ай бұрын
Hi @onecutkey, Not really to be honest... All (CAD)software have pretty steep learning curves. Or at least the ones that give you the (best) result you're most likely looking for. Programs like Affinity designer or Inkscape are graphical design programs that are easier to learn, but harder to be accurate with. Dedicated CAD software like AutoCAD or Draftsight are harder to get into, but give a more accurate and easier to achieve result once you get the hang of it. I've tried many cheap or free programs but haven't found one decent enough to actually use for a period of time. Like with so many things it will take practice to become familiar with a tool.

Wonderful! When cutting the fret slots, do you trust the neck printout or do you remeasure for the frets?
@UnquendorGuitars4 жыл бұрын
Hi Rosalinda, I use a fret slotting template and a jig to cut the fret slots. I suppose you could use a printed out version but always double check the measurements. This is often done for fanned frets. I have found on several occasions that the print outs weren't that accurate. Usually not a problem for body and neck shapes but for such critical measurements as for the fret slots I wouldn't trust them completely.

@@UnquendorGuitars thank you for getting back to me! Really appreciated. I will trust my ruler instead of a print out 😎

Another great vid! Do you do guitar plans for people? I really want to build an ESP MX-250 Explorer but I can’t find the plans anywhere.
@UnquendorGuitars3 жыл бұрын
Hi Phil, Thank you. Unfortunately I don't have, or make, guitar plans other than for myself. I have been thinking about starting to do it, but that would mean spending even more time behind a computer instead of in my workshop. And to make plans of existing models I must have access to the actual instruments, which I don't have, in order to reverse engineer it and take measurements from it. Good luck searching for the plans you're looking for.

great video tutorial! I love your guitar shape design and your awesome work, can you share your pdf file template? please
@UnquendorGuitars3 жыл бұрын
Hey Riccardo, Thank you very much for the compliment. Although I'm flattered by the fact you like my design so much you would like to copy it. I can't share the PDF files or drawings of my guitar shapes. The shape is my own design and I like to keep it unique to the Unquendor Guitars brand as much as possible. I'm working on a guitar design tutorial at the moment so you'll be able to come up with your own unique design. So keep an eye out for that one and I hope you understand why I don't share my design details.

Hey Divine Instruments, Thank you. I might do a video on making a Humbucker template in the near future. I nicked mine with the router while building the last guitar and it needs to be replaced. If you are looking for ideas for templates to route a Floyd Rose style bridge. I made a video where I show and explain the templates I made for that. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eZyXmpKsi5qVfcU Maybe you can get some information from that one.

Great info. I'm enjoying your channel and hope to learn enough to make a guitar one day. I'm about 6'-2" ... not sure in metric... but I have a drill press that I need to bend down to use... when you used your bandsaw... it looked familiar... bending over pose
@UnquendorGuitars4 жыл бұрын
Hey Michael, Thank you very much and I immediately knew exactly were you are referring to. I'm 6'1" (1.85Meter) and although this is an average height here in the Netherlands still most workbenches and free standing tools are to low to the ground. I really need to raise my bench and bandsaw soon. Having to work bended forward all the time is not only bad for your back but it's also not optimal when it comes to precision.
