I assume that if you use the ball burr method then you do not need to start with a smaller ring, correct? That process should be able to be applied without changing the ring size, I think.

Yes. You are correct. I failed to mention that in the film. The ring can be the exact size when using the ball burr

In order not to change the size of the band, what if you hammered before rounding and soldering? Then at the join, you could go over it a bit again so that the texture is seamless.

Its funny I make jewelry all day, but I love watching you do it too. Thank you for putting out these videos. It has inspired me to get out and make some of my own. Keep up the good work, thank you again

I'm just about to start but I will probably always enjoy the videos as well. I've never had any education on it aside from a few videos, mostly from John Hartman from Durango Silver. And I don't know any metalsmiths. Just giving my best shot! I have all the tools, compounds/solutions, etc that I need.. I'm about to purchase the silver next week! Wish me luck 🙏🏼 lol

Thanks again for the video, I’m going to give them ball burr a try. I’m always having trouble getting the sizing right with the hammer technique. What a treasure you are Andrew at this time of lockdown. Hope you and family are doing well. Re the new renovations, I think the lighter background was more impactful. You stood out more in the videos.

Thats a great idea using a ball burr, it just looks so much better than hammering the ring. Thanks for showing us the process.

Ball burr method is messy, but makes a nice finish. I’ll have to try that, thanks.

When using a bigger ball it works better, just need more control of the tool. Also for polishing, the 3mm rubber polishing cylinders work great.

I have a question from lockdown in Paris, 42 day. My question on another subject, I hope that is OK? Here it is, I want to make a bezel for a round stone, 15mm diameter , I get a circumference 47.12 but this not take into account the thickness of the silver I am using. I keep repeating this exercise without getting this right. Your help would be precious.

hi Andrew can you help me please, when you wish to make a hinged round box how do you do the hinge, do you bend it round or do it just like a ordinary box hinge and leave it straight.

How about doing it with a file ? Won't change the size of the ring or deform the ring but will mimic the look of the hammer technique. Thanks for the video!

Hi Andrew! You and Lucy Walker make using a ball but for texture look so easy 😂! Do you have any advice on how to not let the bur run all over the metal? I’m holding my finger behind it but it’s still moving around a lot. It sounds like you have your foot on the pedal pretty hard- should I be running the flex shaft at a pretty high speed? Any advice or tips would be awesome. Thank you!

Thank you. I have been hammering away lately on a few projects, silver and copper. I do enjoy the effect and thank you for warning on the ring size. The hammer marks can work well too with a liver of sulfur wash. Now I have to try the ball burr.

Love the videos. I’m hoping maybe you could do one on the various special bezels especially the dagger. I seem to have a really hard time getting it to lay flat on the back plate. Since you can’t give any pressure without smooshing the daggers I’m stumped on how to achieve this. I’ve tried using steel wire to hold it down but there’s always a patch that doesn’t kiss the back. Thank you!

I wonder if it would be an idea to texture the half round, before you fashion it into a ring?

You could also use a Red Square Acrylic Wheel directly on the metal . It gives the same effect as the hammer and the metal seemed to be already polished .

Thank you for the video. Can I ask you some questions? I will marry in 3 weeks and would really like a hammered gold ring. Can I use the same hammering technique (as you showed with the planishing hammer)on a 18k gold ring? Will it have a similar result? Will the gold ring stretch the same in size (about 1 us size)? Thanks in advance!

Orlando Miller congrats on your upcoming wedding! If it's your first time and you haven't attempted to hammer your ring yet, I would call around near where you live with experience so it is done right. Or do some practice on some old jewelry. Especially if the ring is for your wedding. I want to try this too, but first will practice on some sterling silver old rings that are not of major value. That's a good question is what kinds of metal do you hammer lighter or heavier. It seems gold might be lighter to hit than other metals. I might try hammering on empty soup or vegetable cans or a cookie sheet etc... as my way to practice. lol IDK just a thought!
