What helped my son was this: I don't let anything be a "crutch" or "dependency mechanism thing" because then he will be always dependent on it. I started this when he was 3, now at 12 yrs old he can go to a car dealership without any tantrums. Also a lot of taking him out to loud places (groceries, noisy places,) we don't go to concerts or movies , since we're not into those places ourselves, but start off little by little. Hope this helps.

For me, when in stressful situations, I withhold myself from using the accommodations that I know help me, because I mask in order to fit in. I withhold myself from using headphones, weighted items, and so on. Even though they do help me. I even withhold myself from crying or having sensory overload when noises get too stressful for me. Then after I get home, it all comes out. But then I don’t want to use my coping skills to calm down, I don’t even want to feel my feelings about the whole situation. Needless to say, I’m hyper independent.

We just have pairs around the house and they put them on as needed. Some days, that's all days and other days not at all.

What are the negative impacts of him wearing headphones all the time? Is it that he doesn't hear anything at all when he wears them?

We have the opposite problem with our son. He can't stand wearing headphones but always plugs his ears with his fingers, which is no good because he's actually causing wax plugs that lead to ear infections. It's tricky to find that balance, I'm sure!

Same initially. I just remembered why we did in home headphones. This all started because of the newborn crying and how it would upset him 😅

Atw there headphones that only block half the sound for a gradual effect?

Yes, they are called ear defenders.

I wanted to let you know that my comment wasn’t meant by anything hateful or nasty. Being a mom of two with asd and adhd. Just seeing a couple of my friends kids struggling with wearing headphones all the time. It was really hard for them to get them to not wear them at home.So I know what you’re going through. It’s tough! I’m not against headphones for people that are going to come after me. My oldest has a pair of earbuds that are called loops. She wears at school, but takes them out at home. I think about when I wear music headphones for a while during the day and how everything is so loud after taking them off. Does Christian like light head squeezes? It’s like a head 💆♂️ massage. I know headphones can give a certain tightness pressure🤷🏻♀️

Oh I didn’t take it as a mean comment! Please don’t worry I read it and it gave me the push I needed to get to stop using them in him so thank you 😊. We’re almost at two weeks with no headphones when not in stores or out and about 💙
