I remember riding the wagon and stacking for the farmer down the street from us. we were 10 - 11 yrs old and catching 35- 40 lb. bails from the kicker. we really learned to steer their flight so we had a minimum of real lifting. the best part was riding on top of the wagon watching the look on our Moms faces seeing their kids going by 13 or 14 ft in the air.

For a very little while I tortured my poor W4 International on an old model 67 NH baler. She would do it but on heavy stuff just not fair to that little tractor. Then we acquired a 60 JD and it was a pleasure to listen to that tractor work and just walk away with that baler. Much nostalgia and wishing to have those times back. Good video. Plow day good idea.

I grew up farming in Hainesport, NJ in the 60's and 70's. I love many things about baling hay (not sweating in the haymow though). But the main thing is the rhythmic beat of a small square baler. Ours was an ancient McCormick 50T. I'm a red tractor guy, but I still like the older JD's. I must admit that when you pair the pop-pop of the 2 Cyl with the beat of the baler, you get sort of a rhythm concert!

This brought many memories, we had a neighborhood "group" for the baling, we went one farm after another for several cuttings each year. We started at one guys farm, he owned the tractor/baler, then to another who owned a mower and a hay rake, and it kept going. We had a crew of 3 mowers 3 rakes, 1 baler, and 3 loboys that tranported the bales, plus 2 JD As, one JD 4010 and a IH model F-20 to run the elevator to lift the bales into a barn. This was quite a procession going down a country gravel road, going to the next farm. I forgot the JD 60. I still recall the 4010 breaking down, it was the baler tractor, we just hooked up an A and kept on going.

In the mid 1960’s we ran a JD B and a Farmall M. We farmed 40 acres in the south suburbs of Chicago. Just corn and soybeans alternating each year. Nothing to bale but helped others. The Farmall was the fancy new tractor because it had lights, electric starter and hydraulics. I still liked the JD B even though I had to turn the flywheel to start it then close the cockpits to raise compression. No hydraulics on the B. Had a mechanical lift on the cultivators. Also plowed pulling 2 16’s with mechanical lift. Used heat housers this time of year. I’ll be 70 in the coming months; my brother will be 71. There are times we each wish we had an old JD or Farmall in the shed for those occasional chores. Thanks for showing yours.

Hell lee I remember baling at my grandpa's and he had an old 60 and a 3020.but before that ha had an old 2 linger 435 JD which had a 2-35 Detroit diesel in it.2 of us on the rack.2 hauling wagons,grandpa on top of the wagon using the old get sticker.we didn't use elevators at his place lol.then skid steer to pull the hay up into the hay mow and 2 guys stacking it in there.gotta love those old days.we had an IH 656 diesel hydrostat,a 300 torque flight and a C.and that old 60 could still pull out a heavy silage wagon out of the field yet to lol.miss those days

Wes, I love your idea for a antique tractor plow day. That would be a great video. I am sure everyone would love to see that, you could make it long and multiple video's to watch in series. I really enjoyed seeing your older tractors working again and Tim looked like he was enjoying himself too. It brings back great memories of when I was a young boy in the Pocono mountains and the locals would use their old equipment in the fields. Thanks for sharing all your great stuff!

It's the old iron that has made farming into what it is today. Still got my grand dad's old '35 non-styled "B". Also had an old 14T JD square baler. No issues with it, floor just rotted away. Love the old iron personally. Great video

My grandpa used to plow all out land with our 1947 Farmall M. Mind you it had no power steering. When you hit a rut or whole it about breaks your hand when the steering wheel spins he pulled a 3 bottom plow. But I see a lot of videos of people getting together for a spring plow with antique tractors. You have plenty of subscribers to get a good mess of tractors, I really think you should do it. If the old tractors aren't being used the way they are meant to be, then they aren't living their life.

Oh and the occasional hunt for groundhogs in the garden. Lol.

Hi Wes Good to see the old iron at work, our neighbor and his son used to run a 2cyl and square baler with the modern IH and round baler in the same field for hay on the last day of the season, Sadly The son died in his sleep in Jan 2004 and it has not been repeated since 2003, with the other son driving. It was kinda sad Mom was in the field in 03 taking photo's and gave the picture to Ron's Dad of them together doing hay for the unknown then last time.. Never seen a thrower like that round here, looks kinda neat. the plow day sounds good, I got a buddy with some plows, and I got a few tractors, Just a shame we are to far away up here in Manitoba to come down, Could of brought you some Fordson blue tractors to even all the other colors out L.O.L. Hope you manage to pull it off, would love to see video's of it up here in Canada. Regards Robert

Man I wish Dad had had one of those kickers on his bailer. I'm not sure the make, or year, of the bailer. I know it was an antique when we were still using it 20 years ago. That bastard put out some heavy bails. The perfect bail, from that machine, weighed between 150 and 200 lbs. Anything lighter than 125 lbs was very loose. Anything less than 100 lbs was likely to fall apart when you picked it up. I'll be honest; Loading them into the back of the truck, and stacking them 15 high behind the barn, was not exactly my idea of fun when I was a teenager.
@countrygent46 жыл бұрын
Well, DA if the bale was loose at the weight - then shorten up length.
@deannederhoff5 жыл бұрын
Most bales from a small baler would only be 75 lbs not no 150 to 200.and there's no way in the world you could throw one that heavy 15 high.150 to 200 lbs bale would have to be about 7 foot long

Wes, For the plow day, there are lot's of antique power clubs / threshing show members, online forums that would love another plow day site. I'm a member on Red Power Magazine's forum, there are many members from there out in your region. You don't have to be an IH enthusiast to join, I'm a fan of Red and Green, and work on Yellow for a living, I originally signed up there yrs ago for an IH combine question and have been there since. All of the guys on there look forward to plow days, as well as harvest or threshing days. Should be pretty easy to put something together for a plow day or pull. I'd like to see something similar to your video "my poppin johnny shut them up"... just more competition.
