I'm getting my wife some toilet paper for Christmas. If she gets mad at me, I'm blaming you, Corie! 😆 Just kidding! Loved the video! You're getting better over time at filming and coming up with creative content. The hard work you put into your channel shines through. God bless!

I buy only pure vanilla extract - but I made my own vanilla (exactly the way you show in this video) a year ago, and I let it sit for 4 months. It is the best vanilla I've ever had and I put it in many things that the recipe doesn't even call for - example, I add it to my pumpkin pie, add it to my cornbread, and often I'll double the amount I use from what a given recipe calls for. Your video was very clear - just one thing to add. It's important to keep the beans fully submerged in the vodka (especially if you keep beans in a jar that you're using) otherwise they will get moldy and ruin the vanilla.

I love this!!!! I also love that you said you prefer useful gifts at Christmas. My mom has ALWAYS given care package boxes or bags. They'd have things she'd shopped for with coupons and on sale. They were nearly free for her because she's so good at saving money. In the box would be food, toothbrushes, toothpaste, toilet paper, shampoo and other necessities. NOW, when my kids were young, they used to snicker at these gifts from Grandma. Now that my kids are grown, they look for her box! One year she didn't give the grandchildren their care boxes and they were actually upset because they wanted the paper towels more than the expensive gift she got them! When I was young, I can't tell you how many times that care package of mom's saved me! Anyway.... especially this year, care packages should be what is given. No more electronics. No more crap.

Yes I’ve been making pure vanilla for a couple years. I like to give it for Christmas, also. My family laughs at me because I never use alcohol and I’m too embarrassed to go in a liquor store, so I have to get someone else to buy the vodka for me. One time I had some groceries delivered and I ordered some vodka, thinking that would save me the embarrassment, but when this very young man delivered my groceries, he asked to see my ID! Now, I’m 80 years old, so it was kind of funny that I had to show my id, and I quickly started babbling about how I wasn’t going to drink the vodka because I don’t drink, but I needed it to make vanilla with. 😂 I even have to laugh at myself, but I’m sure your granny could probably relate to what I’m saying.

I have made home made vanilla extract for gifts! I love the smell of vanilla, such a rich fragrance. After I bottled the vanilla for gifts, I took the used beans and poured more vodka over them. I let them set for quite awhile, but they made a couple more bottles of extract. You could also put some of the spent beans in a cup or two of granulated sugar in a lidded container to make vanilla sugar. Smells so wonderful.

Those are wonderful gifts @South of the Heartland. I still have and treasure the one my grandmother handmade and gave to me. She handmade a quilt for each of her grandchildren. The one she gave me is over 60 years old. They are all beautiful, if for no other reason than she made them just for us. She was a wonderful woman in all ways.

I make my own. I always use 1 oz per cup of alcohol for single fold and 2 oz per cup for double fold. I let mine steep a year for vodka, 18 months for rum. My favorite is spiced rum. The longer it steeps the smoother it gets. What a thoughtful gift. It’s the gift that keeps giving. ❤

I've grown Vanilla Orchids in a greenhouse. It's a vining orchid b with small green flowers. The seed pods have to be fermented to bring out the flavor and that's why they feel sticky when you buy them to make extract.

I made vanilla several years ago, along with flavored vinegars for gifts. I put them in small baskets with a set of cute measuring spoons. They were both a hit! I've already given my kids my "wants" this year. A new battery operated lantern with a big package of batteries. I think we're going to have a rough winter and I'll want some light to read by the fire..

Another thing you can use vanilla beans for, is vanilla sugar. You don't need a lot of beans, one or two is enough. You just open the beans and put them in a Jar of sugar. I prefer to use it in Powdered sugar that I make myself. I'm frugal as well 😉 ( what is usually done, when a recipe is asking for a vanilla bean, you need to empty the seeds to the milk, batter, etc. And using only the empty pod in the sugar) You can make a vanilla gift with container of powdered sugar, and a bottle of the vanilla extract. Maybe adding a small yellow flower resembling the vanilla orchid

I started sewing at 51. Im making pillowcases and Everyone is getting no sew fleece blankets except my son is getting one of those chunky wool blankets ( just got 12 skeins of bernat big for him." We also make "Birdpoop" melted white choc over m&ms, rice chex and pretzels. You can pick up all kinds of christmas containers to package them in. My co-workers look forward to this snack every year. Last year I purchased casserole dishes with lids and etched their last name on the side and I found digital svgs off Etsy to etch on the bottom. I make a homemade gift card holder that doubles as an ornament every year for my kids and Christmas day they have to find it on the tree then they can have ornaments when the go on their own. I have made individual, from scratch apple pies, freeze them and deliver on Christmas homemade giant blueberry muffins. This vanilla will now go on my list for next ideas. Thank you for sharing

Vanilla is a great gift for someone who likes to bake. I made it last year and my daughter loved it. You can also add more vodka to the big jar with the vanilla beans after you pour some into smaller bottles for gifts. It's a gift that keeps on giving. I knew there was a reason I saved my maple syrup jars. I need to make more vanilla. Thanks for this video. It got me thinking about homemade gifts I need to start making for Christmas. I also like the toilet paper idea. In a previous video Katie mentioned that she gave your husband Word Search toilet paper as a gag gift. My 97 year old mother loves doing word searches and also happens to spend time in the bathroom. I think that would be a great gift for her.

It tastes most amazing when it's sat for at least a year in a dark, cool place, and shook once a week. I also wash my vanilla beans before cutting them to get machinery gunk off them, or glove gunk from machine handlers, or other handler in the process of packaging them. I'm weird that way.. I too, use the brown or the cobalt blue bottles. I really enjoyed your video though. Your cheerful attitude is awesome and contagious! Glad I ran across this. Subscribed!!

I make vanilla. You have a wonderful start and so glad your sharing. I have been making vanill extract for over two yrs and have learned what I started out doing was incorrect. The 6 beans should work fine because the liquid in the jar is dispersed and you have less alchohol in the jar then you would have without the beans. Rule of thumb 1oz(which is 9/10beans) per 8 oz of alchohol. It is also the fda standard to call it pure vanilla extract. There is many debates on how long you let the jars sit for to be ready. I personally have found you need more the 6month to a yr before it is ready. There is a gentleman who uses the canning vacuum seal on a food saver. He will break the seal every so many weeks, reseal it. It causes the beans to expand and release more oil. He can have a finshed extract in 4 to 6 months. He knows when it done when he pulls a sample bean in a test tube and the alchohol stays clear. (His way is to much work for me). I am also giving away vanilla as Christmas(it's how I started making it) gifts this yr and it exciting to see people faces when you said you made it. Good luck.

When I have leftover vanilla bean pods after baking or cooking with them, I put them in a simple syrup (sugar & water syrup) or I put them in a closed sugar container. They taste wonderful in so many things. My favorite way to use the vanilla sugar or syrup is by adding it to sweet tea for a creamy vanilla back note. It's wonderful!

I ended up using a potato peeler to take a small edge off, put it in my jar and the used the tip of a knife to scrape any seeds that came out on the cutting board. I put the beans directly in the finished bottles for my first try- Amazon - WILLDAN Set of 6 - 8.5oz Swing Top Glass Bottles - Flip Top Brewing Bottles For Kombucha, Kefir, Vanilla Extract, Beer - Airtight Caps and Leak Proof Lids, Bonus Gaskets and Funnel…. I slice mine down the center lengthwise like you did and then also cut them in half across, just to make sure they stay covered with vodka ... They fit in the jars nicer too! 1 oz of beans to 8oz vodka. Also, 70 proof is best so the vodka taste isn't as strong.

I love what you said about Christmas. For me and my family we prefer useful presents. As I am listening to this I am finishing the embroidered bookmark for my mother in law which is something she will love and she has never been given anything like this as she has sons and her other daughter in law doesn’t embroider. I have a nice big bottle of home made vanilla extract in my pantry ready for this Winter’s baking. Thank you for a lovely video.

I did this last year for Christmas gifts for the first time ever. My friends loved it! I didn’t know you could use vodka or rum and had no idea there were so many types of vanilla beans - each differing in taste and smell. I did individual dark brown small jars with vanilla beans(slit down the middle) in each one. I kept them in the closet 3 months and shook them once a week. Great gifts! (Wish I had tried bourbon)

I did this about 7 years ago and I made enough that I had 40 - 4 oz bottles. I bought the bottles, vanilla beans, shrink bands for the lids on line. I also got custom labels on Etsy too. I gave them to friends, family, coworkers and even my mail lady. They were a big hit. At just a couple dollars a piece, very economical too. I put one vanilla bean in each bottle. I had three bottles left over. Years later I’ve had two people ask if I still made the extract because it was the best they’ve ever used. Don’t throw out any excess beans. I buried them in a jar with white sugar for a few weeks to a month. It flavored the sugar so well, I used it in coffee and tea. Also wonderful to sprinkle on your Christmas sugar cookies.

When you get ready to put in jars, do you just pour liquid only in jar, leaving beans in original jar? Can you then use those old beans to make another batch? How long will you use those beans?

Good morning, I make my own vanilla extract and use vodka. I keep mine right in the vodka bottle. I may look into giving it as a gift to some people. I just looked at my order history for the beans I used and they are both grade A. I never paid any attention to the grade before. Maybe I will try grade B next time and see if I notice the different.

Getting ready to strain my elderberry today! Isn't it so exciting to learn all the goodness that the good Lord has provided for us naturally? In my searching over the last two years, I have become enthralled with using so many remedies that God created over what man has done. So many medicines have side effects that are worse than the cure. I am forever grateful for modern medicine as I have been a nurse for 30 years but I have really enjoyed learning more about holistic medicine and straight from nature foods.
