Dr. moon, many thanks for sharing this beautiful sculptural design. I know it has taken you untold hours to create the STL files and I am astonished that you have so freely shared your work. And now I need your help. I have completed the printing and assembly but as with @Allan mine spins very fast. It also makes a rather loud clicking noise while it’s spinning and does not reverse direction. Is it the polar orientation of the magnets thats wrong? What can i do to make this work properly?
@housdrmoon3 жыл бұрын
Hello! On the front_subRing, there are 6 mm and 8 mm(diameter) of Nb magnets. Please add 8 mm magnet more. So that on the front_subRing, there are one 6mm magnet and five 8 mm magnets. kzbin.info/www/bejne/lYTSo6qYpd6hotU --> This is my recent video. And my new kinetic sculpture has same mechanism as AURORA. From 5:30, there is a scene that can help you understand the principle, so please check it out. Thanks!

Hi Dr Moon, could you explain the interaction with the magnets, I.e. how does the pawl system work, with words or maybe video, I have made but can’t seem to get the reaction correct?
@housdrmoon3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question :) In the case of REAR WING ASSAY, A magnet with a diameter of 6 mm is attached to the pawl. This magnet plays a role in always positioning the pawl in the correct position by the pulling force with the magnet directly below it. Larger magnets (8 mm in diameter) have no relation to the above magnets. Instead, this large magnet affects the magnet attached to the pawl of the FRONT WING ASSAY. That is, when the pawl of the front wing comes around the large magnet, the large magnet pushes the opposite pawl into the control gear. In the case of the FRONT WING ASSAY, Large magnet (8 mm in diameter) attached to front wing also same role as large magnet of rear wing assay. That is, the large magnet of front wing will push the opposite pawl into control gear when the opposite pawl comes around the large magnet. I don't know if the explanation is enough or not. If you have more questions, please leave a further comment. PS. the number of magnets should be adjusted according to the situation. Thank you.
@philreed64573 жыл бұрын
Thank you, yes that makes it very clear, thanks again
@philreed64573 жыл бұрын
Oops one further question for clarity, which orientation are the large magnets north or South Pole outwards?
@housdrmoon3 жыл бұрын
@@philreed6457 Maybe you meant about weight optimization. By weight optimization, the rear wing pawl should point toward the 7 o'clock when rotation is stopped. And 6 o'clock for front wing pawl. For more information, weight optimization is very important process because it affect rotation time, rotation speed, operation error improvement, etc. In my opinion (I am also amateur level), weight optimization is a two-step process. The FIRST STEP is to adjust the center of gravity to the center of the circle(wing assay) while increasing the total weight. By increasing the weight, the MOMENT OF INERTIA(1/2 * m * r^2) of the wing can be increased, thereby improving the operation error and maintaining the rotation for a long time. When the first step is complete, you need to perform the second step. That is to adjust the position of the pawl when the wing is stopped, as I said at the beginning. This is to ensure that the pawls of front and rear wings are in a similar range when the rotational force is reduced and the wing starts pendulum motion. I hope my explanation will help you a lot in setting up your kinetic art. Thank you. :)
