Regarding the Theremin instrument, it was invented circa 1928 by Leon Theremin (aka Lev Termen), an electronics genius and Soviet spy. After promoting his instrument in the U.S., Stalin called him back to the U.S.S.R. where he continued making amazing electrical and electronic devices. The most remarkable such device (that we are aware of) was an eavesdropping device now referred to as The Thing. The U.S. had just built an embassy building said to be immune to electronic surveillance. The Soviet equivalent to our Boy Scouts invited the U.S. Ambassador (Harriman, as I recall) to a ceremony where they presented him with what appeared to be a beautifully carved plague with the Seal of the United States, as a token of friendship and peace. The Ambassador was impressed and promised to place it above his office desk, which he did. Well, this token of friendship was a sophisticated eavesdropping device, listening in on the Ambassador's conversations for years before it was detected. Once detected, they couldn't figure out how it worked, and thus referred to it as The Thing. Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin occasionally played a Theremin.
