Making It Simple: Principles of Design

Hi everyone! I'm continuing the Making It Simple video series this week, looking at the Principles of Design. These principles are used around the world in all forms of design, from architecture, to print, and even paintings.
I'll introduce each of the principles to you, explain where and why you should use them, and even show you how the Masters work them into their paintings. So follow along and be sure to tune in next week when I go over the Elements of Design.

In art school, I learned the “principles of art” not design. I looked up the difference and principles of art have repetition is grouped with pattern. The way I remember the elements is they each can be separated like, line, color, shape and so on. When I taught jr/hs art, I would mix up pattern. Thank you, this refresher and learning helps me

Hi all yes even though I learnt this in art and design school this refresher was great because Gwen you have a special way of explaining things that make it a lot easier to remember and even though some things are now on Auto pilot it's good to be reminded why we do some things.

I learnd a lot about balance in the last months. When I do an abstrakt painting and I add a little bit on one side mostly I have to work on the other side as well. Otherwise the composition is not in balance. This is really a working process...and the more I paint...the more I see. Good information Gwen!

Hi Gwen. Thank you for this great video with very useful information! I'm used to see pattern as a different thing. Usually when I read about pattern associated with the principles of design, they are more than a kind of a repeated texture, they are a foundation like: Checkerboard, cross, horizontal, vertical, cantilever and frame in frame. In Californian Watercolors, they call these the pattern I believe, but I can be wrong. Cheers from Portugal.
