Great resolutions, Branden! I’ve already accomplished one of mine: to play another Yakuza/Like a Dragon game, which I’m doing with Yakuza 7. If you need guidance on the Atelier games, feel free to message me. It can be a bit confusing to know where to start and how to progress. Though in short if you decide to play Yumia as your first game all the way through, I would recommend trying the Ryza series next.

Man, I’m the opposite here: I have shelves of console JRPGs that I have never touched despite my bestest intentions, while my handheld systems are where all the magic has happened. My Switch might as well not even have a TV out capability. I resolve to actually play and beat a Big TV JRPG Game this year…BUT WHICH ONE?!

According to my GAMEYE, I have (physically) 40 PS4 JRPGs and 29 PS5 JRPGs. I cannot publicly admit how many of those I have actually beaten. Or played for more than a single sitting. 😅

Great list! Seeing as you've got a PC setup might be worth looking into some fan translations as well. Or even some of the PC exclusive JRPG localisations. There's a huge goldmine on PC.

For resolution 5, I recommend an entry in the Etrian Odyssey series if you haven't played any. They're really good but also really tough. It's also the more ideal way to play them, in my opinion, given the map-drawing aspects of the series.

If we are going that route, I'd recommend Persona Q2. It uses all the casts from Persona 3-5 and has the same mechanics as Etrian Odyssey. I'm sure Gems has played Persona 5 Royal. I still have that game on my 2DS.

If you’re wanting a single A/indie RPG, I’d recommend the Doom and Destiny series by Heartbit Games. On a bunch of platforms and steam. Your goals aren’t lofty. Just gotta knuckle down and get it done. That’s the hard part. My goals are to finish some (at least) backlogs games, keep gymming it and just enjoy it more. What it is, no clue. Just enjoy it. :) Happy new year and welcome back.

I love the idea of a reasonable list of resolutions, I always tell myself I’m going to do way more than I know I can. One series that may be a little more obscure that I would highly recommend is the Growlanser series, unfortunately you would have to start with number two since there’s no translation patch for the original. But it puts a really interesting twist on real time strategy combat that weaves the gameplay into the story that really drew me in when I started it! I’m currently on number 4 of 6 and I really want to finish the series (minus the first one) this year!

If you want, I can tell you that The Guided Fate Paradox is indeed obscure and unusual. I played and completed the first dungeon in that game, which is basically revolving around Cinderella and her desire to be free from being a storybook character. I played it because it was created by the people who created Disgaea, Nippon Ichi, but I didn't really like the rogue-like dungeon crawling. Since Disgaea became popular with Disgaea 5, The Guided Fate Paradox is my recommendation. You might look up a guide because Nippon Ichi games tend to be extremely confusing in their progression systems.

Great video! I'm relatively new to your channel but have really enjoyed the videos you make. My resolution for 2025 is to finish all the Trails games. I started them toward the end of 2024, and have only beat Cold Steel 1 so far, but since I loved it so much I started from the beginning and I'm getting close to beating Sky FC. Since I'm having such an amazing time so far I'd really love to eventually beat them all. I know they are long games and I am going to try not to burn myself out on them, but I'd love to finished them all this year. Your Trails videos were what lead me to your channel and your passion for the series and JRPG's in general is really apparent and I look forward to more of your videos in 2025!

My jrpg goals for this year are Yumia, Daybreak 2, Sky FC and Expedition 33 for new releases; SMT V Vengeance, Ryza 3, Death End Re;Quest 2 for backlog. I'll keep an open mind for Reslariana, but the gacha legacy makes me cautious. Other than that, I'll see what strikes my fancy. Don't know how much of that I'll achieve.

Complete my backlog. Which is now like over 50..some I haven’t even opened years and years and forgot. I started a while ago to put aside 2 hours each night at the very least. At the same time. Small steps but so far I’m blasting through games I know are shorter. At the point now where it’s like, “ why didn’t I do this sooner!?” . So much joy experiencing these stories and getting through my games with down time👍🏻

Some good resolutions there! I think you'll be able to do a good amount of those! If I were you, I would start with the atelier game since that's just one game to finish one resolution, then things can pick up some steam! For myself, I'm going to say I want to play at least 2 classic rpgs, whether that's the Lunar games coming out, the Suikoden games, the Dragon Quest remakes, we'll see. Or I might do Grandia. Some other non-game related resolutions I want to do it I want to do a 48 hour fast session each week, and I want to make an illustration.

I didn't really notice any disconnect because of the subtitles in Atelier Ryza during the cutscenes because of the great animation and acting. Slight problem to start with when you are in combat, as your teammates make tactical recommendations for you, but these are also displayed in the top left so peek up there when one of them chirps up.

My plan this year was to tackle 12 games this year, 1 per month. But Large RPG or story games. Including Yakuza Infinite Wealth METAPHOR refantazio Red dead 2 PERSONA 5 PERSONA 3 reload UNICORN overlord Shimegami tensei vengeance DRAGON QUEST 11 Final fantasy 16 Horizon forbidden west Final fantasy rebirth And a few others if time allows or i finish a game earlier then id try to squeeze another shorter game in between. Wish me luck 😎✌️

Hey Branden, loving your content lately! I can totally relate to the hunt for a non mainstream gem.. I don’t know what it is that’s so appealing but I found it happening when I was bored and needed something I would consider fresh. I went through this phase over the last few years and found myself never finishing or getting even mid way through any of them. I now have a pile of them , that just sit there and I’ll never go back to them. I wonder why I even bought them. I don’t know what it is about playing a game that nobody has heard of, but it became a cycle. It was almost as if I just wanted to keep trying or finding a new different experience. I think that’s when you need to take a break from gaming and wait for the next game you’re excited for. Knowing I have less and less time now, and being more realistic about games, I have really honed in on how many games I can play a year with the time I have. This has helped curb those games I was curious about but ultimately didn’t play. The only game I really enjoyed due to the music and combat was The Caligula Effect 2 overdose. I feel the struggle!

Playing RPGs handheld will change your life. They're the perfect games to just vibe with or pick away at while watching TV or waiting in line or falling asleep. Last year I decide to replace scrolling Instagram, et al, with handheld gaming. I'd basically never played JRPGs and they're becoming my go-to genre to just pick up and play.

I set my goals this year to make games this year. One being starting small with successfully committing to a game jam, which I succeeded last weekend. I want to work more on personal game ideas throughout the year. I also want to beat more games this year too, but I'm more focused on personal growth on my skills as a game developer so I'll prioritize making to playing this year.

Great video! I think all of those goals are pretty reasonably met! I'd like to think mine are too, so let me share them here: - Finally start playing the Trails series (most likely with Sky, now that I have the Steam Deck it feels perfect to play through those) - Play one of the Atelier games (already started with Sophia) - Play at least one visual novel - Learn at least one new RPG speedrun (perhaps Harvestella???)

I high recommend Atelier Meruru! Always been my favorite! All of the Arland Saga is great, Lulua included! For the smaller, obscure JRPG I might recommend The Agarest War series! In terms of weird, I'd recommend going back and trying Eternal Sonata. There are differences between the PS3 and 360 versions, so keep that in mind. It's older, but it's just so odd storywise. The premise is bonkers. My JRPG Quest Objectives, if you will, are as follows: 1. Beat my first turn based JRPG 2. Play Omori 3. Play Undernauts 4. Obtain a JRPG soundtrack on vinyl that is of my choice. 5. Make friends through the JRPG lovers community 6. Make a video this year about the games and media I engage with

Love your channel! Since you said to comment it, heres my resolution Beat the games I started in 2024 and didn't finish - Persona 3 reload - Metaphor refantazio - Shin megami tensei v Vengeance - Paper mario ttyd - Lisa - And finally finishing Final Fantasy X I have beaten one game: mother 3. Started in late December and finished it a few days ago, absolutely loved it and I'm now playing omori. I want to get around to all of the "earthbound inspired indies" that have caught my eye The big ones I'd like to get into or finish this year are ff6, ff13, ff15, chrono trigger, Phantasy star (all 4 if I like them) and trails in the sky. I started the original sky and like it but I'd like to at least finish fc and sc before the remake drops Hopefully I can come back to this video and say I've achieved most of these, and i hope you meet your goals as well

Trails and Xenoblade is an entire list of resolutions by themselves, and they're mine. On CS2 and powering through, can’t wait to go back to Switch so it’s easier to play whenever. And XC2, but soon those games will be fighting over the same system. Also poking at Like a Dragon, hoping when I finish it the sequel might be on PS plus, because that’s another resolution: LET GAMES ON A SERVICE I PAY FOR COME TO ME. That’s what the service is for! What ergonomic chair did you get? It’s a hobby of mine.

If you want a good JRPG-inspired indie RPG, you should check out Rise of the Third Power. For more AA games, the Fuga: Melodies of Steel games are also excellent, and and the Voice of Cards games as well if you want to scratch a Yoko Taro itch. I haven't played it yet, but also wanted to shout out Maglam Lord as a potential sleeper gem, since it was made by the devs that made the Summon Night: Swordcraft Story games on GBA (some of my favorite GBA games).

You got this. Last year I wanted to finish a bunch of games that I didn't end up polishing off, part of the reason I didn't was a couple of games I chose to play took longer then expected and I dropped more then a few. In terms of Atelier games I also would like them to still have an English dub, given Atelier Yumia might have a darker take maybe look into playing the Dusk Trilogy which still have the dub and Atelier Escha & Logy is one of the better entries. One indie JRPG that came out last year only on Steam that I saw nobody talk about was Chrono Ark which quickly became my Game Of The Year. As for myself I want to try and play more JRPG's that came out before 2006 as I've noticed that's a huge gap I have for some reason. At the moment I'm playing the FF Pixel Remasters.

I already have all my games on steam categorized into different collections and i beat the 2d Soulslike Tails of Iron to start off the new year, but I haven't touched a JRPG since 2022 when i burned myself out 100%ing Final Fantasy I-V. I dabbled a bit in Trails in the Sky FC but i want to finish it!!

My new years resolution is to not care and just play whenever I have the time to, and not get bothered if I don't finish a game. Been forever since I actually finished a jrpg, except for the shorter ones. Btw: In stars and time is on console, too. I played the whole game on PS5. And it was great. And I played Poison Control. It's really short so you could actually finish it in a day or two. Was pretty fun. AND...if you seek a good handheld game and own a psvita: play Muramasa.

I had fun with the Dusk Diver games. The first one is fun and although repetitive, it doesn't overstay it's welcome. Play Romancing Saga 2, it is excellent. I played the demo for Romancing Saga and for Metaphor to pick my "Game to play to kill time before Daybreak II comes out in a month" game, and Saga won easily. I'm about a week into it, and it's completely held up and it's addicting. I get why everyone raves about it, it's really good, like way better than most games I think are "good". Also, a really good PC setup is fine if all you want to do is play indie games. I play all my games via Steam on my PC, but if you want to play the latest releases the way they were intended, you really need a graphics card. It's one of the turn-offs about PC gaming; with a console, you don't ever have to worry about hardware, with PC gaming, making sure your hardware specs are up to snuff is on you. Finally, my own gaming resolutions for this year are two: 1. Play and complete Trails through Daybreak II and Trails in the Sky First Chapter remake. I like to start off with easy resolutions that will absolutely happen, helps set things up so that I remain optimistic. I always make sure my first New Year's resolution is the easiest one to accomplish, that way, I have momentum and I'm optimistic, because I know I'll at least get the first one. 2. Meet Brandon at a convention at some point. Meeting you at Anime Expo was such a good experience that I want to try to do it again this year. However, this one isn't just me, I need your help too. Please try to tell us when you'll be at a convention ahead of time enough that I can make plans to be there.

With your indie resolution, one that caught my eye was Keylocker. It came out september i think and i havent gotten around to it yet but its getting pretty positive reviews One i can personally recommend (that was in my other comment) is Lisa the Painful. Its a game thats made me feel genuine emotions more than any other game ive played and the reason i havent finished it is just because of how sad it is. but its also a really funny and silly game at times with humor thats inspired by Earthbound, but a lot darker It might sound like its bad from that description but its really something special and different if you can get into it

Yes I totally think those games are doable in 25. I don't THINK too many JRPGs are coming in 25 that will totally blindside you, so that's a plus. I'd recommend Tokyo Xanadu if you haven't already played that, I don't think I've seen you talk about it. AA game that really surprised me-- MY Blue Reflection so to speak lol. I played many games since I started a YT channel in 24, but even though I got a lot of new releases, I didn't play too many so that kinda stunk. I want to get through Metaphor and Armored Core this year... Besides the typical weight resolutions everyone and their mom has, I'd love to grow the channel to 1K and start doing significantly more painting again. Here's to '25 🎉

I don't do New Year Resolutions anymore. I can't really focus on myself much sadly due to family stuff so I just try to enjoy what I can when I can. Heh, I'm with you on the not playing Atelier much due to them not having an English Dub. At first the seem like some nice chill games but then I played Rorona and regretted buying that because I was so stressed due to the time limit and I barely saw any story in that game. Totori did the story better but I got no ending at all due to the time limit so that sucked. I got Meruru to give it a try but barely played it. I got Ryza due to the thighs lol and it got rid of time limit BUT they got rid of the English Dubs too so that REALLY sucked. I kept trying Ryza like 3 times, restarting the game from the beginning every time since each time was so long in between but only played for a few hours each time. Now if the series added an English Dub I would LOVE to go back into the series again. I'm the opposite in that the Switch solely a handheld for me. Never docked it once lol Never had a reason too. The dock keeps getting super dusty because it just stays there on the stand forever without being used. Heck I even got the XB2 pro controller but never used it either lol Just love playing on handheld too much. The same will happy with the Switch 2 also for sure. ^_^

My resolution is to find a piece of time at the end of each day that I can dedicate to playing. After getting back into gaming, I spent too much of 2023 just buying games and barely playing, 2024 was a bit better, I played FF1-5,7, and 8, Chrono Trigger, Eyiuden Chroncle Rising and Xenoblade Blade 1. Currently playing Xenoblade 2, I think I want to make the first part of this year going through the rest of series, and then finally get to Xenogears. I owned Xenogears back in 1999, but didn't get too far, I think I got stuck somewhere, then moved onto something else, most likely FF9 when it came out the next year

I played Poison Control in '23 on the Switch. It was a fun little game while it lasted. It was short, didn't run great on the Switch, and the gameplay was pretty simple and repetitive. I enjoyed it anyway because it didn't drag on forever, I liked the characters, and the artwork was nice.

The last few years I tried to keep up with modern releases, which ended up with me playing a bunch of average games to be part of the discussions. So last year I tried to play more games that I know I like and that I always wanted to try, but that way I spend way too much on games in general. So this year I set myself up for 12 games for the next 12 monts. Astral Chain (*) Bravely Default Dragon Quest 4 (DS Remake) God of War (2018, *) Journey Okami HD Return of the Obra Dinn The World Ends With You (DS) Titanfall 2 XCom 2 Yakuza Kiwami Yakuza: Like a Dragon (*) * are re-plays I am very curious how far I will get on that list.

Hi! My recommendation for the Atelier series is "Atelier Escha & Logy". The PS3 original was my first atelier game and I played it through lockdown. I have Romancing SaGa 2, Metaphor, and some Atelier games (I own all of the Mysterious, Ryza, and Arland games) all in my Steam library; hopefully I get around to some of these this year! It's interesting that you feel more immersed and connected when there's an English dub. I always see the argument being that the Japanese audio is a "more authentic experience". I don't buy into that, & I usually prefer the English dub if it's available, but I've never not played a game because it didn't have an English dub. Actually, the only instance like this for me was when a game had English only -- for over 20 years, I tried to play Final Fantasy X, probably six or seven different genuine attempts over the years, and each time I could not get farther than an hour or two because of how much I disliked the English dub (I'm not just talking about the cliche laugh; the English dub is awful as a whole). Last year, I found out that the X/X-2 Remaster supports Japanese audio, and I instantly clicked with it and saw what everyone else sees with that game -- which I truly wanted all this time. Anyway, cheers to 2025!

I just finished Metaphor, and had a great time, even though the game was a bit long. Right now I am playing Star Ocean Second Story R, and it’s a lot of fun. The plan is to play Romancing Saga 2 remake after that, while waiting for Pirate Yakuza and Suikoden remastered. Already shaping up to be a fun year! Just need to find time ;)

I just make a grab bag of like... a bunch of titles i'm interested from different genres for variety and then try to get an average of 2 -3 done a month. Last year I played 31ish games (if you count the separate ways campaign from re4 as its own thing) so matching or beating that would be cool. But at the same time if i finished more lengthy games and only hit 24 i would be happy.

Resolutions are not meant to be fully completed. It’s more of a ‘hope.’ So anything you finish from it is a success! (Could just be my own personal cope, but oh well 😆)

I have Poison Control - it’s very odd 🤣 I couldn’t really get along with it but probably more of a me thing! I’ve never played any of the Atelier games but recently bought Ryza 1 and 2 in the sales

I would literally marathon the entirety of the Atelier series if they would just do an English dub. I would even purchase the entire series at once if they were dubbed. But I just can’t bring myself to play them in English subbed. I simply don’t enjoy it.

My resolution is to stop doomscrolling social media and spend more time reading, playing games, and spending time with my wife and family. I've already finished a couple of games and several books so I feel like I'm doing pretty well.

Your list seems very doable... unlike mine which comprises of Xenoblade 2 dlc , Xenoblade 3 and its dlc , Xenoblade Chronicles X , Trails of Azures , the Trails of Cold Steel Quadruple , Pathfinder King Maker , and Pillars of Eternity 1.

My resolution this year is to not buy any 2025 releases and focus on previous years of gaming. We will see if I make it, but I thought it might help me get through my backlog and also cut down on FOMO being as much of an issue if I can’t even buy any games. This will be hard for me though. But i want to get through my backlog!

Oh, Fires, what a MIMOSA are you!!! I have almost no games in my native language Dutch and have to play in English or Japanese with English subtitles. You're so spoiled... 😂😉 Have you played Cris Tales? Really good indie rpg, loved it. And even I finished it under 30 hours. How about Stella Glow for the 3DS? Fantastic game. Or ETRIAN Odyssey 1 Untold Millennium Girl, the remake for the 3DS. Also great. And FE Awakening is a must play. Really great game, this was peak FE. My rpg itch started with Dokapon Monster Hunter for the GBA. Before I even knew what RPG's where. Something for you? Or is that to easy? Take care, Fires! Keep yourself save.

While I understand that you want English dub, I really suggest that you let loose of that feeling. There are so many really good JRPG's that have no English dub at all. Personally I went from really wanting English dub, to not care any longer about it. I just read the English subtitles and listen to the Japanese voice acting. I cannot understand it, but you can feel the emotions and purpose behind the voice acting. I even switch from English to Japanese dub very often, because that English dub is so bad it hurt my ears and makes my toes curl... If you really want a great Atelier game, then you have two choices, namely turn based or real time. For real time there is really no choice but to take the Atelier Ryza games. Just start with the first game, and work your way up to the third game. These games are pretty loosely, but ARE connected. You will "fit" in Ryza 2 much better if you played the first game. If you rather go for turn based, then Atelier Sophie 2 is, without any doubt, the best of the latest turn based Atelier games. Atelier Escha and Logy is a good second one, followed by Atelier Lydie & Suelle and Atelier Aeysha. I hope this is helpful...

Thank you for saying it. Switch is not a handheld. It just ain't. It's a home console that happens to be portable. Most games for it aren't rely designed with that handheld-ness being in mind.

My gaming resolution last year was to play all of the DarkSiders games. I bought them all for Switch physically over the years but never played any of them. I only played an hour of the 1st game 🥲 For this year, it's play all of the Y's games available for Switch and im slowly chugging along. HAPPY YOU PLAYED OMORI 😍 Put over 90 hours into it wanting to see everything there was to see in the game. And have a slowly growing pile of merch for the game 💸

Poison control, I would compare it to Crystal, but with shooting instead of hacking and slashing. Only thing that holds it back for me is it's control scheme. It's a bit jank and clunky
