Making Leather Spur Straps | Modifying Spurs and Adding Bling

My Daughter needs a new pair of spur straps for another pair of spurs. Of course, I'm going to make them myself. I used a 3D printed template to mark out the straps. After cutting them from some 10oz veg tanned leather, they got dyed to match her boots, and them a bit of bling was added at her request. These turned out great and will serve her well.

We have horses also and I have considered repairing quite a few leather things. This video was helpful.

There are so many leather things to repair with horses. Everything is made from leather. I'd say go for it. You can do it!

Nice looking spurs and straps. Now get ta making some custom guitar straps with them thar skillz you have. I once had the idea I was going to make me a leather "Duster" long coat back when they were a thing in Rock n Roll. Then I started adding up the cost AND the weight and realized IF I could afford to make a good one I would look more like Ozzy Osborne walking around trying to carry all that weight AND a guitar.

That's on my list for sure. I have a few guitar strap sized pieces set aside just for that. I also used to want a leather duster. I still like them.

Spur rowels are more of a personal taste or dictated by some competitive events, horses do not have a "type". The fewer number of points and/or smaller rowel means a more aggressive spur and require a deft touch, the larger number of points/solid round and/or larger circumference rowel are more forgiving.

I hate using an Xacto knife for cutting leather. I've ruined so many projects with one of those. Last one was a guitar strap I recently made. Try some saddle soap when burnishing the edges.i lightly wet the edge with water and apply some saddle soap and the burnishing turns out so much better and easier!

I'm always trying different knives to see if one works better than another. I recently picked up a round knife, but I need way more practice using that thing. Plus its not sharp enough yet. I have seen the saddle soap used with water. I need to grab some and try it out.

@@homebuiltshop I found a small tin of sadle soap in the shoe shine area at my grocery store. Yeah I'd like to get a round knife but I'm afraid I'd cut my hand off. I've already had my share of stitches in my life.

How do you sharpen that beveling thingy? Mine isvery dull 😀

I use the edge of a strip of leather mounted into a kerf cut from the table saw. It holds the leather on its edge letting you use the edge as a very small strop. I hope that makes sense. Lol.

it has nothing to do with it becoming dry its really thick and is hard to cut
