the switch is on the input side where the voltage (more so) & power isn't large enough to arc out through the switch!! Danky(diode gone wild) knows this. And even on the secondary, or output side, see how he has to almost touch the one side to the other to get the arc reaction(lighting) going.. even with all that power & voltage been dumped by the capacitors & transformers you need to be very close before your in danger. WHAT IM TRYING TO SAY IS HE KNOWS WHAT HE"S DOING!!

@@LutzSchafer Given that one microwave transformer at saturation can pull near 3Kw with pretty poor power factor, I'd say that's correct. Granted that switch wouldn't last very long if this were a constant load, or you tried to break 400V under load with it :)

@@ukko9154 agreed.. those switches(if it's the one im thinking it is) are rated for 6 to 10 amps at 240V AC yet the breaker was more. & the switch survived. but only because he wasn't keeping the load on long. if he did it would melt no doubt.. it probably even seen it's last day as a reliable switch after this video!!!

I really like how you measured the current. There's a hundred videos online of guys making arcs with "resonant capacitors" but this is the first one I've seen that measures the actual output volts and amps going into the arc. The way you reduced the voltage across the transformers and then added the mains voltage back to it was a really clever way to get around core saturation:-)

@@casper2501 im sorry but what is your point?
@aaronbrandenburg2441
@aaronbrandenburg2441 4 жыл бұрын
@@casper2501 actually wrong but. Still right. Where he is it's the same as the US voltage on average around a hundred twenty volts ac. If his place is newer likely it would be 20 amps. Although if it's an older place it may either be 15 or 20 apps. For example kitchen will be 20 amps. If properly installed. Also a 15 amp receptacle does not necessarily mean a 15 amp circuit. Because a 20 amp breaker is permitted to feed a 15 amp receptacle if there is more than one on the circuit. But of course will be better have a 20 amp receptacle on a 20 amp circuit in general. Although occasionally you'll find a single circuit breaker feeding a single 20 amp receptacle in some cases. Sometimes literally a single receptacle not a duplex receptacle. AKA a dedicated circuit. Such as for example a dishwasher if properly installed. Microwave if properly installed. Although typically I've seen for a larger microwaves only. Just depends on who and when it was done excetera. And now there is supposed to be a 20 amp dedicated circuit in the bathroom for the receptacle. You might be asking why would you do that. Modern hair dryers. That's a newish code requirement. Also in terms of kitchen receptacles there should be two receptacles there should be two Appliance circuits minimum. And also somebody else that most people don't realize. Is that also extends to dining rooms don't remember the year that happened but it does. And don't forget the rule about within six feet of water AKA a sink. Outdoor receptacles excetera excetera are required to have ground fault protection. And now arc fault as well. Although I don't know about outdoor receptacles for arc fault but probably still good idea. By the way microwaves enforced lights hand trip ground fault interrupters. Seen it myself. Also behind a large Appliance generally gfrc is not required in general? Speaking of which a refrigerator should be on a dedicated circuit and or a freezer. AKA if you have a basement that has a fridge and freezer in it needs to be two separate circuits. By the way I've known of a few places that and had to be redone because the breaker would trip. Also if you were to have an older electrical system in your running a window air conditioner. And the fuse blows use a time delay fuse on at circuit. If the running amps are under the rated load of the circuit. It will blow on Startup that is a steroid non time delay fuse of the same rating. I told my father and grandpa that when I was a kid. They had the same problem with the fridge and freezer downstairs Now there's two separate circuits down there for them. And also new service entrance. 100% Breakers now. Also there is now two washers and two dryers in the house. And central air so yeah. My parents place recently had the electrical system updated as well. So no more blowing fuses and tripping Breakers. Also if you have a foursome light on like a basement stairs and you're going to be up and down all day leave it on all day. If it's fluorescent it's best to leave it on if you'll be in an out then turning on and off. It's not about energy saving it's about saving the life of the fluorescent tubes. just wanted to put that to rest once and for all. They've had for some tubes in the basement and on the stairway that have lasted probably lasted 2 years. Already blackening and flickering. Just goes to show.

@@Cyklon-A what's going on here is the very definition of dangerous. when they say it is the amps that kill you there's plenty of those. 0.035 of an amp can do it. This was what 7 amps on the secondary? But if you're not in the circuit it isn't an issue either. Better make very sure you aren't though. I don't like the idea of connecting the primary Mains to the secondary output of the Transformer because if something goes wrong it could send a shock through the wiring in your house and fry your computer electronics Etc. It only gives you an extra four hundred volts anyways which is nothing. Instead you can use some resonant capacitors on the primary side.

For the turn on curren limit, you can try what I did on my 3,7kVA isolation transformer: Put a fluorescent lamp ballast in series, with a relay contact that shorts it and a 230V relay coil that is just connected directly to the mains voltage. Because the relay is mechanical, there is always some delay between powering the coil and the contacts closing, and it is enough to limit the inrush current, at least in my case.
@HighVoltageMadness
@HighVoltageMadness 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah good idea. Basically youve made a soft starter. You use also use a capacitor, or high power resistor intead of a ballast. It might even be possible to get a large NTC thermistor in series that would suppress the current spike.
@Basement-Science
@Basement-Science 2 жыл бұрын
@@HighVoltageMadness A capacitor would be a bad idea. It wouldn't suppress the initial spike much, and when it gets shorted by the relay, it would also damage the relay contacts. A power resistor or NTC works, however ideally you want those to be OK even if the relay fails to close, which a lamp ballast can tolerate no problem, plus you can probably get them for free.

It pulled 21 amps @230V constantly and I had to watercool the whole assembly. In the end, I had to move the air cooled heat radiators outside the room in which It was operating because the whole room was like 50*C after a few hours.

You can actually direct connect 400V~ on the transformers , i actuallu tried , it worked just the primary windings got a little bit hotter of course. Try it, 400volts on each transormer, they will not get damaged or overheated, unless you run them for over 20 mins. I tried , my calculations were around 8 , 9 kV at the output, and i connected all secondaries on series. They worked great.

Why short circuit current is lower than arc current?
@Wiresgalore
@Wiresgalore 4 жыл бұрын
Because the capacitors limit current on the output to X amount of amps. And with the output shorted the voltage is pretty low. Once the arc is pulled out, the voltage is allowed to come back up and and translate into more total wattage demanded from the transformers. Its acting kinda like a constant current power supply.

Wauw!! Normally diodegonewild is a serious e-stuff handling learningchannel(from wich i learned things as the practical working of pfc (the e-theoritics i learned the most from SamBenYaakovs channel)). But hey, now i see, sometimes this wild diode makes pure wild-e-fun!! But tjee, thát long arcs??!! Dodgy but amazing he sais! Hahaaa, bloody hell? Yes, at least!!

Hello DiodeGoneWild! You are one of my favourite youtubers. But everytime you upload a new Video, I hope it won't be your last. When you say: "It's dangerous and dodgy, but it looks awesome", i do agree, but please stay safe! Apart from that, thank you for your great content in all of your videos - I do learn a lot.

Holy shit! OMG that super dodgy and crazy! Love the video. I like how he is casually saying nice and amazing right next to the 1 meter arcs jumping around and burning the air. Adding the salt didnt even make it worse like with the water heaters. This is even crazier than the microwave debunk video but he handled it as if this is something he does regularly. I dont know what to say anymore than super dodgy as always. I hope you see this amazing idea how does something like that come to your mind. Keep it up its just unbelievable magic. Very nice

Could use a few and have a electromagnet. Thats better than some that cost over 500$. All in metal box with switch and 3 in parallel or series but put those transformers to money? Just a thought. Need workshop to really do it good enough to sell but their amazing magnets. Do you know if cutting the coil down to primary would be more magnetic or would it be same if pushed primary to top? Rambling but wondered. Also could I use a changing input to make it more or less magnetic? With 240 to 0 dial although cheap and not accurate but cuts voltage also do you think if mot magnet would they get hot with 240v? Mains no dial to have enough to hold work?
